I have a leupold vx3 with the varmint hunter reticle. I have it sighted in at 200 yards but I am having problems finding a program that shows what range the holdovers are for my specific loads. Does anyone know of a program that uses that reticle or how to figure this out?

Thanks

Yeah I have that as well. Problem is it uses a a different grain for 7stw. Velocity is about 3-400 fps faster on my bullet than the book.

Herein lies the problem. The designations for hold-over aren't Mils or MOA. Put a yard stick at 100 yards. Measure in the reticle what the lines mean, first line is 2" below, second line is 3.5" below, ect. That converts them to MOA.

Plug BC, MV, bullet weight, and bullet diameter into jbmballistics.com. Tell it to give you MOA for trajectory, cross reference the chart it gave you to your reticle, go shoot it in the field at the various distances to confirm.

I have the two apps on my iPad that you need. First is the iSnipe. I just downloaded the data for my 270, which will be similar to yours. 130gr bullet (Nosler BT) at approx. 3000 fps. Here's what ya got.

Up 1.5 inches at 100
On at 200
down 6.7 at 300
down 19.4 at 400
down 39 at 500

Now, data from iStrelok. For your reticle, which is the same as mine - the Varmint Hunter, your BDC lines are as follows:

Crosshairs - on at 200
Line 1 - on at 287
Line 2 - on at 387
Line 4 - on at 487
Post - on a 568

And do we believe these numbers? Well, I ran the same math for my 260, which at the time had a Burris FFII 4.5-14 on it, with Ballistic Plex. I had the rifle sighted in so that dot one was for 250 yards and dot two was about 360 yards. Just so happened that I had big round hay bales at those distances from one of my deer stands. So I dragged all my stuff, and a big target, out to the hay field and set up and shot. Dot one was precisely dead on at 250. Dot two was precisely dead on at 360.

And iStrelok will give you the same type data for just about every reticle sold on planet Earth. You got a Horus, a Hawk, a Nightforce, a Minox, a Russian FFT....you get the idea.

PM me if you want to vary the input any. I'll run it for you. Or better yet, if you have an iPad or iPhone, get the apps and play with them. Pretty cool.

I agree with said above. I run Hornady factory superformance through a REm700 5R with the VXL boone and crockett. Zeroed at 200 then had to 'dope' in the other crosshairs at distance. Took a little but now have card. Reticles are great but have to work with it. Great for hunting. Would want mil dots for target shooting at long distance. But up to 500 with a little elbow grease they work great

Who needs to convert anything? Refer to my note above regarding iSnipe and iStrelok apps. The iStrelok will take your specific scope reticle and tell you what distances match up to the various lines, dots, or Nikon donuts. You do need the MV, BC, weight, and caliber. No conversions needed, though it'd still be a good idea to check if it's shooting where iStrelok says it'll be shooting. I did, and my rifle did.

I never knew there were so many BDC type reticles.
