My son was walking back out from the stand this morning, and motioned to me to walk down my shooting lane. There was a snake coiled up in the middle of the road, and it was very docile. He picked it up and it was just slowly twisting itself into knots. It was raining and 36 degrees when we found him, and I'm sure the cold is why he was so lethargic. I am assuming that with the large amount of rain we have had the last 4-5 days the snake's den must have flooded, and he was out in the short grass trying to get some sunshine.

Rat snake.

Very good snake to have around, let him go near your camp (they love them some mouses)
Your right on the cold temps, but they dont tend to "den up"

Not just any Ratsnake, thats a Texas Ratsnake lizard
I'm sure the name has nothing to do with this, but if you look at the splotchy patterns down their side, you can often find a few of the spots that look like the shape of Texas. I've found some that were almost perfect little Texases..
No telling why he was out, but he better quit that.

They don't make good pets usually. They are not dangerous by any means, but they are pissy little bastiges. They like to bite and crap on you.
But they are great little mouse/rat eaters.

It is surprising that he was out in this cold weather, it is about the only time I feel safe.
