A good day is being out in the field. A great day is harvesting at least 1 bird. Because that's all I need. An excellent day is a limit. An average HUNTING days is 3-4 birds.
Don't get discouraged if you don't shoot limits.
You have to ask yourself: Are you out there to learn, watch birds, and have fun with the chance of shooting ducks, Or are you out there to get your limit?
Limits aren't the only sign of success.
x2 I run a guide service on public land. It's tough at times but can be very rewarding! Put in some homework and you'll have some good success. But just being in the field is more then enough for me. Even if we scratch for that day!

Don't worry about the number of ducks you kill.
Some hunters go out so that they can brag to others how good they are and how many they shot.
Some hunters go out to enjoy the experience and be with good friends, limits or not.
The second option is a hell of a lot more enjoyable to me.
The fastest way to burn out on duck hunting is to set goals for your hunts......whether it is numbers of birds or species of birds. Once you hit those goals, there's really not much to aim for afterwards. And if you don't hit those goals, you will get frustrated.
Just go out there and have fun!!!

An awesome day is a limit. A great day is being out in the woods.
Any creature in my vicinity that possesses an explosive penis is going to be killed.

With lots of experience comes valuable knowledge. If I scout my spot, wait for the right timing and actually get there before someone else, I usually get limits. I have had my days of goose eggs....I learned from them. The one thing about public hunting in a large metro area is you never know when someone will find your spot/spots. The worst days are when you got to spot A,B,C,D and E and someone is in each.....wake up at 3am just to turn around and come back home without hunting....that is the worst right there.

I agree with geyduck in that get out there and enjoy yourself, do your own thing, don't worry about others... If you are not shooting limits, keep scouting, if it was so easy, then it would not be a challenge. As soon as you start shooting limits, then you start being selective in what you shoot. So your goals are not always comparable to others, so really just go out and do your own thing.

The only time I worry about a limit is when I have 5 on the strap and 6 sitting on the water 30 feet from the muzzle of my shot gun. Rest of the time it is just put a couple of splashes down so my dog can go get them.

I'm going to start calling it bird watching unless I bring home some meat, soon. My wife is starting to think I've been shacking up with [censored] dancers.

For me, a good day is getting to be out having a hunt. My arthritis makes it hard to reload quick enough sometimes when it's cold and other times, makes it difficult to get my safety off in time - but I'm having a good time.
If I get the opportunity to see decoy spreads and calls working, I'm a happy fella.
2 - 4 birds for me is a great day.

Took a 1/2 day of vacation this AM to hunt with my dad. Didn't fire a shot. Loved every minute of it. He's 63 and we won't have to many of these hunts left.
