I am going on a guide hunt Dec. 22 and want to hunt public the day after. I live in Austin, so not familiar with public lands in North Texas.

Any suggestions? You can PM so you don't name anything out in the open.

I'm not looking for the X - just a suggestion of what lake. I have the map book, but just because hunting is allowed, doesn't mean it's any good.

My son will be on leave and he is coming along. He graduated boot camp last weekend (11/15) and not sure when he will get leave again this season. So, this might be it for him until next season - so would like to go where some birds are.

Lavon may be a good lake for you. lots of walk in spots but more hunters also. generally speaking you will find more birds than Lewisville and Ray Roberts.

make sure that wherever you go that you obtain a permit to hunt. you need permits to hunt on Lewisville and Lavon. they can be obtained at the Core of Engineers Office. if you are not going to hunt a core lake then you wont need a permit.

Last year we had to have a permit for Waco, but this year they eliminated the permit, so you can just go - which is nice.

I appreciate that this is a pretty well known spot, but there is a PM button for a reason.

If you're going to hunt lavon this year and you didn't last year, you must apply in person at the corp office, normal biz hours m-f. Might be pretty tough to do by today for you. The lake is down so far all the ramps are closed, and about half the hunting area than normal, its pretty worthless, especially on a weekend..

I just don't want to get up there and have a dud. The boy has not got to duck hunt this year because he's been in boot camp. And like I say, probably won't again after he goes on to his next school. So wanted to get in some different area hunting while we are there.
