Headed to the inlaws deer lease wed.-sat. In Sonora. Loaded with deer and Lots of exotics but I'm mainly after aoudad. I have a 7 pound 270 130 gmx shoots pretty decent. I also have a 338-06 that weighs 12 pounds and shoots 210 gr barnes ttsx. Which one would y'all take? I took my 25-06 last yr and busted a fallow. But felt a little under gunned when I seen those big bodied aoudad run away at 350 yards.

I'd go with that .270, myself, but take the .338-06 if you like it better. Only you know which one feels best.

That .270 with a GMAX is perfect. Drill him thru the shoulders and your golden
The .338-06 is more if an elk rifle than a sheep rifle.
The .270 will drop any sheep on the planet without breaking a sweat

I was thinking the same thing. I really like the idea of the .270 and sheep hunting. Even though I would pull the trigger on anything with a 270 I think that I felt so under gunned last time with the 25-06 I wanted to be sure. I built the 338-06 to send for this trip but it has turned into something that I didn't want as far as the weight. So I'm going to try to find someone to recontour the barrel or just flat out sell it.

25-06 is a great cartridge but at 325 yards I felt was pushing it on these critters. So I didn't shoot. I've busted whitetail that far but feel these seem to be able to take a bullet well.

We killed one with a .22-250 with a 55 grain v-max at 80 yards. That is under gunned but the point is you gotta place your shot. Shooting one across a canyon is different than shooting one eating at a feeder. You will be fine with a .270

I agree with the .270. I wouldn't hunt anything with a 12-lb rifle, not even in Africa--unless someone carried it for me. Did you hollow out the stock and pour lead in there?
The .270 IS the sheep hunter's rifle, and for even aoudad.

Jack o'connor certainly thought so and he killed a pile of them

.270 would be my choice. I have killed WT, MD, Axis, Red Stag, Aoudad and Sika with my .270 with 130 grain Corelokts. Had a lady borrow my .270 to kill an Oryx once with it also.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

So I'm going to try to find someone to recontour the barrel or just flat out sell it. If you look at energy levels they are very similar depending on bullet and speed. 270 gets there with moderate powder and bullet weight and 25-06 gets there with speed. Seen a mess of elk and mules fall to both. Really a flip of the coin. I own a 270 although I seldom hunt with it you couldn't talk me out of it. Be un texan not to own one or the other, so figured why not both.

I shot one at about 800 yds through both shoulders with a 180 grain 300 win mag. I found chunks of shoulder bone, a great blood trail for 80 yards, then nothing. Pretty sure I saw it one more time, but never collected the dang thing! They are tough critters. Shoot well and shoot hard.

I killed elk and dozens of mulies and pronghorns with my 25-06 when I lived in Wyoming. No disrespect to Jack O'Connor, but if the 25-06 had been standardized when it was the 25 Neidner there wouldn't be a .270 today!

I'd take the 338/06 if you are hunting from a stand. If you are still hunting, then take the 270. I shot mine with a 44mag carbine and it went less than 30 yards. Shot was 115yds
