Robin......  Sparrow..... Once I adopted the self imposed restriction of "eat what you kill" at the age of 17....the murderous rampage ended... Coyote.....  ..sorry, there are just some lines I won't cross. Lol robins eat the exact same thing as a dove... you cannot tell the difference between the two... same size same color meat... same taste

There's a lot of birds out there that are way better than dove. And a few that aren't.
I tried a field lark, a starling, and a cardinal. The cardinal wasn't any good. The field lark was, and the starling was very good.

As kids during the summertime my cousins and I suffered the same fate if caught around the house when the soap operas were on, so we made it a point to be gone as soon as one of us was up and could wake the others.
Trusty Benjamin .177's in hand and sometimes fishing tackle too, we ALWAYS carried matches and salt and pepper. Anything on what was then Coastal Prairie that we could catch or shoot was scraped, scaled, or skinned, gutted and seasoned and then roasted on a spit and eaten when we thought it was cooked enough. We graduated from sparrows and perch toasted quick by a pine needle fire to eventually slow roasting a proud spit of bob white quail and a cottontail over mesquite coals that was actually good.
That lucky morning when we heard the quail calling and eventually successfully ambushed the whole covey with the benjamins was one of the last times I remember us all hunting together. It also drew attention from out fathers who saw all the feathers a few days later when we were out looking for the bird dogs that had ran off.

Man, what memories. I just decided that me and my boys are going to do that after deer season. Lots of rabbits this year. We're going to rough it up, a little.

Armadillo......little greasy but wasn't bad from what I remember. Our neighbors where we hunt caught one by the tail and killed it. Then they butchered it and put all the meat back into the shell and buried it in the coals of the campfire. Wasn't bad!
Rattlesnake....had it fried and on the grill. Also not bad.
Crickets and grasshoppers.....cooked over a candle flame in Boy Scout camp. VERY sour tasting and gross.
Tried to eat a jackrabbit I shot once as a teenager....could'nt get past the live tapeworms wiggling in the gutpile or the roundworm larve I found in the leg muscle. Chunked the whole rabbit.

bass row and field lark is about all I can think of...

Back home in La, the rule was you didn't eat rabbit until after the first frost to address the worm problem. Not sure if a shivering rabbit kills internal worms or what, but never saw any in the sizable quantity I've eaten following that time. Charlie

Ever seen a chicken eat a worm, or a roach or poop tumble bug,or even poop?
I think dove will eat bugs and worms to if they are available.
That said in southern La. robin is kind of a staple of a lot of old timers. It does taste like dove.
I have also had beaver, nutria and coot while visiting friends down in the swamps. Beaver is actuall pretty good.

I ate an armadillo years ago and yea, it was not bad.
My arm fell off three weeks later...
but I only use one hand anyway.
ok, the arm part was a joke....
Hunting is easy..it's getting permission from your wife that is tough.

I'll try about anything once, but don't go out of my way to find new stuff. There's probably a lot of stuff I'd eat just to bug someone else, but wouldn't bother to try otherwise. Squid and octopus are good eating to me, as is squirrel, rabbit, and pigeon. I've tried oyster, and found it to be nasty, but like clams and mussels. Frogs are good. The sandhill crane cutlet I had last week tasted exactly like good venison.
I'd eat raccoon and opossum, but the wife refuses to cook them. I guess I could try cooking them myself, but think my poor cooking skills would have a bigger affect on taste than the critter it was made from.
I'd eat a lot of the oddball stuff on here before salmon and the other oily, strong-flavored fish.
Deer quality is not measured by antler size

I'd rather eat a raccon(which sux) than pronhorn. Tried it every way that someone said it was good and it still tasted like sage and dirt.
Never had Aoudad but I gotta figure it taste like old billy goat, which I have never had but could have once. I couldn't get past the smell.

I am sure most of you have heard of foie gras. Not pate' though, the real stuff if pan seared is the finest of the fine.
Years ago in Mexico we had a "rice" dish called escamole. Needless to say it wasn't rice.

Guess my "weirdest" would be zebra, raccoon, and moths. Moth was the only thing I didn't like. Zebra was a salty meat but delicious and the coon was amazing. Moths were not lol
Just doing it for fun now.

Doves are grain/seed eaters. Robins eat bugs and worms. But you are right, they do taste very similar.

Some of these things y'all are talkin about I eat almost daily, pronghorns, alligator, rattlesnake, those aren't weird at all I have all that in my freezer right now. Coon, squirrel, javelina, cow tongue, calf fries, are not "normal" I guess but I've eaten em all and it doesn't seem weird. I may balk a little at coyote but I guess eating any pointy toothed critter is a little odd. Bear is good as is coon and although I haven't eaten it Ive heard many say that mt lion is also good. Carp, mud cat, and drum aren't the best but they eat ok. I did not like black bird and turtle was a little strong but I would eat it again.

In my Fire Department a "traditional breakfast" is a Saltine, peanut butter, and salsa. You WILL, at least, try it on your first shift of duty. Every civilian I've had try it, comes back for more.
Other than that steer, buck, doe, chicken, bass, catfish, crappie, squirrel, rabbit, elk, dove, alligator. I'm not as adventurous as yall.

I've eaten racoon, possum, armadillo, bobcat, frogs, rattlesnake, etc.. and its all OK. Never tried coyote, at least not yet. The only thing that I can say that tastes bitter is fox. So far that is the only meat that I say don't eat.
