Do us all a favor and buy a 4 in 1 whistle. A real duck call is the last thing a beginner needs.

i've got a green mallard one. it's been through he!!. not my favorite but they do work well for the price. Id go cheap on your first one. once you figure it out you can go blow on some high end ones somewhere to figure out what you really like before you spend big money on one.

How will he learn to blow a call if all he has is a whistle?

Which quack head could I start out with.... Not sure but it's a red one. I'll check the model if I ever leave the vets office. I got several years ago when Walmart had them on clearance.

It's the Quack Stacker. Just looked in the blind bag sitting behind me. I put it on my gf's lanyard.

X2, then learn how to use it before you use it in the blind.

I can't believe someone who has been hunting for a while is letting someone blow a duck call on the first hunt!!!!!!
The woods is not the place to learn, there's a lot you will learn and a lot you need to learn, but that's not good for anyone to do on the "First Hunt"
But get a call and learn at home, any call will be fine for a beginner because you don't know any better yet, that time will come and you should have it figured out then.

How can you dummies possibly get this many posts in and not mention a DR-85? Seriously.

I would second the DR85 as the best call to start with.

Dear beginner, just go on the hunt and listen to the birds, not the caller. Hopefully the guy that takes you doesn't over call. Ducks don't make that much noise to begin with. Unless you're in an area full of Mallards, which is doubtful, a few whistles and chucks is all you need.

I'd just buy something cheap. I will say this and I'm not trying to be mean but if you are going with someone that knows how to hunt/call...then just let them do the calling as you would do more harm than good trying to learn how to call during a hunt.
But by all means buy one and start practicing. Get one of the instructional calling CDs. But overall calling is about working birds and knowing when and when not too call. You need to learn this part by observing other guys calling during hunts.
Dear Lord please bullwhip me for saying this but I agree, Marcstar is in the lead. Please nobody use this as a quote!!!

This forum reminds me of the movie "groundhog day" sometimes, the same threads over and over...maybe I'm just spending too much time on here.
Oh well, go with the haydel's DR85

+1000 On the DR85
But leave it at home until you get some practice under your belt.
As a newb, let the more experienced guys do all the work. Just sit quiet. Look straight head or low and move when they tell you to shoot.
If they flare, they will blame you anyway. Good luck, soak in the experiences, and have fun!

The other calls mentioned are good in the fact that a beginner might be able to make them sound okay easier, but they will not teach you how to call.

When someone starts off with "Never been a day in my life" the last thing he needs to think about is getting a duck call. Well first off, I never said anything about using my call on the first hunt lol.... But I am a really quick learner and want to buy a call to start practicing with... I'm not a novis hunter or fisherman, I mean I can work the sh*t out of a grunt call lol jk.... I know it will take time, but I got to get on the ball because I probably wot always have someone to take with me and I already shot my buck for the year so I plan on doing some new duck hunting on my new lease....
