So I'm watching a hunting show - Can Am Presents:

Hunting elk bulls and cows in Mich.

The first hunter is put on a cow and shoots way under at 200 yards with a .308

The second hunter is put on a Bull at about 250 yards. Shoots SIX times to drop the animal. Geez, it was painful to watch.

The third hunter takes two shots on a smaller bull and finally puts him down with a third shot in the eye.

Having never been elk hunting - but it seems like excessive shooting.

Some people shoot AT the animal and some people shoot at a particular spot on the animal with a gun that is properly sighted in and at a distance for which they have a reasonable expectation for the POI.

Now second episode of Can Am Presents:

Brady Buck Hunt

1st hunter, a kid about 14, missed on a cull at about 60 yards - clearly shot under. OK, kids miss - but the dad starts saying "great shot, you got 'em". Of course, 2 minutes later they looking around and no sign - and it's "I guess we missed".

2nd day. Same stand, the kid drops a cull six - but the shot is high over the shoulder - obviously hit blew out the spine high. An inch higher and it would have just grazed across the back.

OK, folks miss or make unintentional shots - but why do you put this on TV and call "great shot" on misses or near misses?

I really think this damages the reputation of the sport.

His sister is up next - it will be interesting to see what happens.

I was wrong, not his sister.

But she did get a 8pt.

Hard to tell the shot because the video only showed the deer's butt. Can't tell where the shot was - but they "said" it dropped right there.

Guess the little girl is the only one who can shoot on this show.

Ease up on Larry! He is awesome and fun to talk too, very knowledgable man about deer.
Back to the op...they shouldn't air that..six shots..heck edit it. Or better yet learn how to shoot.

sounds like somebody didn't practice at
250 yards like they should have if they
intended to make a 250 yard shot. if you
can't make the shot, don't pull the trigger.
if you don't want to practice to be able
to make humane ethical shots, take up
another hobby or stay at home. you can't
buy marksmanship online or off the shelf
at the store.

practice with what you hunt with or
keep your a$$ at home.

Me personally, you get 1 shot..1 at an animal you seek to harvest. I don't care if its buck fever, scopes off or you just choke like the 06' Mavericks...unless the animal is wounded, you're done. That's only fair. You dueled with the greatness of nature and came up short. Respect it as so and practice and learn from your errors.

You have obviously never participated in that annual Texas Holiday we call "dove hunting"

Actually, quite the wing shooter here. Dove, the greatness of pheasant and a little duck hunting. The difference being those birds move at break neck speed so nature has the upper hand. However, in keeping with the philosophy, its the same reason you don't shoot dove off of a power line.

I guess if you have enough money or know the right people, anyone can get on a hunting show these days. They are all pretty bad.

Elk are large, phlegmatic animals and usually don't go down as quickly as whitetails, even with a perfect double-lung hit. None of my seven bulls required more than one shot, but 4 got a second bullet because they were unaware that they were dead.

But....I once had an eight shot rodeo with a caribou in Alaska. My excuse was that the double-lever scope mounts on my rifle had loosened. That's my story and I'm sticking with it. (The scope mounts, the first levers that Kimber made, got the old heave-ho).

Shot my elk 3 times and had finger on trigger for fourth when he fell. First had blown his heart up but he didnt seem to notice. 2nd 2 were lung shots but were unneccesary as I found out. Doesnt mean I wouldnt keep shooting next time. Elk are huge almost never drop. You owe it to it to put as many in it as you can to kill it quicker IMO

OK, I see. As I said, I've never been elk hunting - so maybe this is the norm. If so, then I stand enlightened.

However, I can't help but wonder two things:

(1) First, perhaps using larger calibers would be prudent? At 200-250 yards, I doubt if an elk wouldn't drop using a .375H&H - seen African animals bigger and badder drop with single shot from .375 or 7mmRUM.

(2) I seem to recall watching many a video of folks dropping elk up to 500,600, even 700 yards away with a single shot. Is that BS?

Didn't see the show and not defending the shooters in anyway, but some people believe in shooting elk till they stop moving... how fast can you shoot 6 times? I can shoot 4 through a bolt gun pretty fast at reasonable ranges.

Yep, I was taught, when shooting an elk, you keep sending aimed rounds into it until it falls or the rifle goes "click".

I don't know about y'all but if go on an elk hunt and miss a bull at 250 yards I'm gonna take a 2nd 3rd or fourth shot if needed.. Sure as heck am not gonna put the gun down and just observe and just admire the animal after I miss. Sounds pretty crazy to me lol

i wouldn't try a 250 + shot
at the last golden-fleeced unicorn
on earth if i hadn't practiced with
some full power ammo 200-300 yard
shots to know for sure i was
fully capable of doing so. if
i were a guide, i wouldn't let
any clients loose without seeing
them make a shot, much like a lot
of african outfitters do. you eff
up over there, you're liable for
the trophy fee regardless if your
gut shot animal is found or not.
i'd much prefer us in the u.s. would
self-police amongst ourselves so
we won't have to have a guide along that
has to oversee us on a hunt.
