Like the topic says how far a trail do you consider short?
My first kill ran 100yd. Dead
My 2nd kill ran between 50-70 but i'm thinking 60yd.
My 3rd and latest ran MAYBE 50yd. More around 37, 40yd.

All were shot with NAP Thunderhead 85grners.

My dad's elk cow with org. Rage 2-blade ran maybe 38yd as well.

I'd say 50 or less is short. 50 to 100 not too bad. 100+ can concern me. Over 150 I start to worry unless it's a pretty profuse and steady blood trail.

20 is my best...he actually ran 30 yards...but he went 20, turned around and came back ending with a spectacular backward ganor landing in the ditch, right under an old pallet that had washed in. i barely saw an eyeball.
100 er less is short..200 is a good one. and about a half mile or more is long.
my furthest has been about 80 yards. i do go for the double lunger most the time, but have sent a few heart shots when they were presented.
i know a guy double lunged a 9 pointer and it ran full sprint 262 yards(as close to it as my range finder would grab) and then drove its face in the dirt for another 12-15. some animals have what i call "heart" and some just react differently. i shot a deer..i thought i missed...then she just laid down and died. weirdest thing.

It depends on the animal you shoot as well. In Africa, I shot a bush duiker and basically pegged him to the ground and he didn't go anywhere. I also shot an Impala, perfect shot, right on the shoulder, pass thru, and he went over 200 yards before he dropped and you could tell he died while at a dead run (pun intended). There was a big crash site. My Gemsbok also went over 100 yards, even though it was a perfect shot. For Whitetail deer though, they aren't as hardy and tough as the African game so anything under 100 yards is very good, if you ask me. Like sprinkler said above, some animals have heart and just run and run and run until they drop, while others may run just a few yards and stop and look around until they fall over. And if it's a really big animal like a moose, they may not even run at all, just flinch and stand there til they fall over.

I shot a pig last October that is still running

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Instant dirt nap (spined). That's the shortest I've ever had on a whitetail. Shot was high and not intentionally so either. Just forgot to aim small.

Shot an 8 pointer, he ran stumbled right after the shot, ran 10 yards, fell down, got up, and he's either still running today or he's dead somewhere Mexico...... LOL

I don't always shoot deer, but when I do, I prefer B&C's.
I don't always shoot ducks, but when I do, I prefer banded ducks.

If I could get them to pile up within 50 yards everytime, I'd be happy.

My buck this year ducked at the shot and got spine whacked and instantly dropped. I immediately grabbed another arrow and split his sternum and he bled out quick and was dead.

Brother shot 8 point this weekend and it dropped on the spot. It was a heart shot and said he could not believe the deer did not run.

Years ago I shot one and it jumped, looked around and went back eating, and fell over 30 seconds later.

I would say under 75 yards. I think the "kill clock", the time it takes for the animal to bite the dirt is more impressive. A deer that takes off running as soon as it's hit may go farther than a deer that just trots off, but the kill clock time maybe be less. So it's kind of relative to the animal.

I found an old mechanical broadhead in my dad's old archery stuff from like the 80's and had it in in the quiver for a pig dumb enough to show up. Sure enough when one stepped out I switched out arrows and let her fly. Hog made a short yelp and dropped on the spot. No kicking nothing. Craziest thing I ever saw ha I didn't even know if it would open up let alone do that kind of damage.

While dropping the animal quick, a spine shot, to me, doesn't count. A good double lung or heart shot and pile up within 20 yards, to me, is short. (Like this...)

a couple weeks ago in Menard County. Sorry it's a bit fuzzy but we took the video on a iPhone through mesh.

Most of the hogs, javis and bobcats I've shot have gone about 20yrds, furthest probably 40-50. Have yet to shoot a deer so can't really help with that.
