I have this rifle and sighted in with winchester 150 grain power points, wouldn't ever get a tight group 2in a little low at 100yds. Switched to a federal 180 grain that's all I had with me and first 3 shots were touching but about a foot low. Rifle has 1/10 twist. What ammo/weight do y'all recommend for that twist rate.

What's wrong with three shots touching sounds good to me. I have the same gun with a heavy barrel cut to 16" and it shoots 180gr and 165gr federal fusion into a ragged hole.

Nothing is wrong with them touching besides it was shooting a foot low, but trying to figure out the right grain for this twist rate. I also never thought changing brand ammo would make such a difference, granted i went from 150 to 180 grains just didn't think it would drop that much

Your gun likes 180, fix the scope and go hunting...

I've shot a number of hogs with the 180 grain Federal blue box .308 ammo, and it's great. It both expands and penetrates very reliably.

Sorry for all the extra info, what I'm wanting to know is what grain bullet do y'all recommend for a 1/10 twist heavier or lighter? Will bullet weight to twist really make a difference under 300yds?
I know growing up never even thought about it, I would buy whatever ammo I could find, never really worried about weight, or brand, if it was the caliber I needed buy it, shoot it and never look back. I never sighted my gun in every time I changed bullets. This is probably my 3rd Savage rifle and seems like the slightest ammo change (grain or even brand) messes the accuracy all up.

For 1:10, the heavier bullets 168, 175, or 180 will work best.
I had the same rifle and it was a tack driver with 175 SMK or 178 Amaxes.
168 Amaxes worked pretty well also.

Over the past 50 or more years I've sighted in a few rifles. It's not unusual for a rifle to have severely different POI with various ammo. Only rifle I've ever owned that does not is a SAKO TRG. But it's got a tempered target grade bbl and is a tad more costly than standard factory rifles.

My Savage 10FP works well with all, but really shines with 165 Sierra Game Kings, the Federal FEP308C load. It also shoots identical with the 168 Matchkings, so no reset when switching to paper...

every body puts different power and charge to push bullets downrange but the 1/10 twist 308 loves the 168 and heaver bullets just my experience

My tikka shoots 168s and up great. The two times I tried shooting lighter the groups opened up from .5" to 2.5". Some guns just don't like lighter bullets. There are many charts available regarding twist vs weight. With a 1:10 you should be able to shoot as heavy as you want. As others have said, don't worry about the point of impact just adjust your scope and be glad you found something your gun likes. The reason for the lower POI is most likely velocity but don't let that discourage you. The heavier bullets carries more energy. Especially at longer ranges. Ok, I'm rambling.

I have and shoot 3 completely different 308's. My Sako TRG shoots and groups just about everything factory or handloads pretty much to same point of impact. It has 1n 11 1/4 twist. Shoots 175 gr Sierras same hole, 150 gr Barnes TTSX reloads for my Rem SPS in 1/2 in. The Rem has a 1 n 12 I think and I have to rezero every time . Because of button rifling ect. That's what you and most all of us have on standard factory bbls. I surprised the larger projectiles didn't impact higher. Remember, your bbl is like a tuning fork when you fire it, it's moving!

First, a given twist rate does not mean your gun will like or not like a certain bullet. A 1:10" twist just means you can shoot a heavier bullet and it still be stable. A 190 SMK will stabilize in a 1:12" twist just fine, and shoot very well. If your rifle doesn't like a certain load/brand, it doesn't like that particular load, meaning the powder or powder charge for that bullet. For example, I had a customer that his rifle shot factory Nosler Accubond ammo horrible. He wanted me to do load development on it, but said don't use the 180 Accubond. I told him if that's what you want to shoot, then let's use it. I made it shoot 1/2 moa for him, and he was shocked. It doesn't mean your rifle doesn't like that bullet. It doesn't like the load used (powder and/or powder charge).
Second, anytime you switch brands or bullets, you generally will have a point of impact (POI) shift. That's normal. If it shoots 12" low, add 48 clicks up, and you're good.
I see this reference all the time about twist rate. Because you have this twist, your rifle won't like a certain bullet weight. Not true. A bullet is either stable or it's not. If it's stable, it can be made to shoot very well. You give me a 1:10" twist and a 150 grain bullet, I'll make it a hammer. You give me a 1:12" twist shooting a 190 SMK, I'll make it a hammer. As long as the bullet is stable for a given twist rate, you can make it shoot well.
