Good friends and myself decided to have a little fun before we start going non stop guiding hunts the rest of the year. Got our three man limit in just over an hour and shot nothing but gadwalls and a hooded merganser hen, until the very end when we just needed one more bird. Smacked an ole red head drake at 8 yards. Calm all morning with overcast, but birds were in our face... Highlight of the hunt was a high flying group of migrating Gadwalls in formation overhead. I screamed at em with my echo and worked the jerk rig like I was trying to break it.. 5 birds broke off and descended from the heavens right into the dekes. Was an incredible sight! Looking forward to this front moving in tonight!

Nice hunt. Are those magnum Higdon foam filled decoys? Do you like them, and are they holding up well? I just got some and they appear to be pretty good decoys, paint scheme is a little bright but just trying them out right now and wanting to buy some more if they hold up well. Mine will be banging around in the boat on a texas rig, I do not baby my decoys with slotted bags. Thanks

Mine will be banging around in the boat on a texas rig, I do not baby my decoys with slotted bags. Thanks They sure are! I have mine texas rigged as well, they are tough as nails! You are gonna love em. I have some that are four seasons old and look nearly brand new, some even have a couple of holes and still float like new. They are worth every penny. I have their mallards, ringnecks, woodies, canada floaters and their new alpha series fullbody honkers. Quality across the board. There is good reason for the brighter paint schemes, the drake mallards are whiter to pop more to grab the attention of higher flying birds. The hens are fairly darker to be seen better in cloudy or foggy conditions. I love em.

Gadwalls have saved many a hunt for me. In many ways they are my favorite duck.
I have known guys that would pass on dozens of Gads waiting for Greenheads. Not me, puddle ducks is puddle ducks.

Yes I was a little worried about the brighter color but all the ducks I had come in Saturday went straight to those drakes, it was cloudy though.

Looks like a fun morning. There is no better feeling than breaking off birds from a sky-high flock. Congrats.
