I've been to Stubblefield Lake in Sam Houston National Forest and it looks promising. Does anybody have some intel they'd be willing to share about where else I can find hogs?

I went hunting in Sam last night. I was in the stand a total of 5 minutes before 2 big boars got into a major fight. They sounded like they were less than 50 yards away. This went on for over an hour with them fighting off & on. Finally the entire sounder moved in behind me. I could hear them in the brush, but they must have smelled me and they turned around and started heading straight away from me. I could still hear them fighting off in the distance this entire time.

30 minutes before dark I hear something approaching my stand from behind me. It gets right to the base of my tree and I'm waiting for it to come out in front of me so I can identify what it is.. Well, it goes silent. Finally, right at last light, it gets up and starts moving off to my right. I can see a black "blob" but can't make out what it is. I'm right handed so it was hard to move the rifle around to get it in position so I could look through the scope.. I could not fire that way as the butt of the gun was not in my left arm/pocket. Had I shot the scope would have got my eye. Since I still can't tell what it is I decide to just turn my flashlight on and see.. Yep, it was a pig. Had I had a pistol I could have easily shot it. It stood there looking up at me trying to figure out what I was. It was maybe 40 lbs. It did not run until I clicked the flash light off, then it took off running. It was a scary walk out on the same trail that the pigs were fighting on less than an hour before.

In short, PM me and I'll tell you where the pigs were at yesterday. I have seen them in this area many times over the years so they are living close by.

I used to hunt the Old Sabine Bottom unit in Lindale. Hardly ever went out there without seeing pigs. I quit deer hunting there because it is overrun with them. If you go there, go to the west side of the unit, it's all bottom land with a river front, and a few ponds. Took my buddy last year and killed one about 400lbs within an hour of being there.

Where is this and what kind of gun are you allowed to use there? This is just down the road from me I think.

Several years ago I called the ranger station down at Sam Houston and asked about hog hunting. The ranger told me that if I showed up at 6am on Sat. he would take me out, show me where they were and help me load them afterwords. They had a real problem with the hogs tearing up the place and wanted them gone.

BTW, I did show up and he kept his word. I shot two that day and he helped me load them into the truck.

The point is, call the ranges and ask. They will know where they are and they want them gone almost as bad as you want to hunt them.

If you are into bow hunting, Lake Grapevine has a hog problem. You'll have to get a permit from the ranger station but they are supposed to be all over the place out there.

Get a map of the LBJ from the HQ in Decatur or better yet call and talk with them; the acreage nearest Cottonwood Lake is "shooting restricted" year around according to my map. However, there is plenty of land open to hunting with hogs on it.

Cheers and good hunting.

I don't think rifles are allowed on the grasslands.

To a man(or woman) the park rangers hate hogs. If you go scout, stop by the ranger station and start a dialogue. Most of the time they will have a pretty good idea of where the best places to get after them are and will be happy to help.
