I agree w/ Jeremy. 5 or 6, or even heavy game loads in 7 1/2. 4's are overkill IMO. If you get into a lot of birds, you will have a blast. If going w/ a large group w/ drivers and blockers, be very careful. Eye protection is highly recommended. Good luck.

Verrrry good point on the eye protection..... I was hit in the shoulder a couple of weeks ago and it left a deep bruise. Had it hit me in the eye no doubt my mothers prediction would have come to fruition..... And one more time, I'd go w/ #4 shot for pheasant....

My preference is #5 Shot for wild birds. #6 for pen raised birds.

I usually shoot 6's especially if there's a chance for some bob's.
I would agree with you, but then I would be wrong too.

6's all the way, 5 and for 4 too course, and they tear up the close birds. get copperplated or nickelplated lead as you get rounder pellets, deeper penetration, and more uniform patterns with the granulated buffer in the shot cup-more expensive, but worth every penny.

Absolutely: plated 5's, if you can find them. Otherwise, sixes early in the season and fours late (or if the birds are flushing wild). FUN, FUN!

I've torn up some pheasants with #5 in a 20 gauge. I say 6's

Wow, thanks all for the input. I'll check again on this poll later to see if 6 shot is still the way to go...you guys are awesome with information on hunting. My first source always.
