A good quality 55 grain or heavier soft point will do the job within reasonable ranges/conditions... rick

55g Barnes TSX or a 62-64g softpoint Winchester PowerPoint 64, Federal Fusion 62
If you have a 1/8 or 1/7 twist you could look at some 75g TAP or similar

We used the 55gr Barnes TSX with good results. Both of my younger boys took their first deer with it.
Wait a minute and the "gotta use a bigger cannon" crowd will be along to tell you that you can't humanely take deer with a 223. The more you are around those kind of guys, the more you realize that many of them are trying to compensate for poor shooting skill and poor shooting judgement with bigger holes.
God is so good to me.

62gr federal fusion. Took down a good size buck at 85yrds. My daughter shot him youth weekend. Ill post pics of the bullet in a minute. Went through just in front of shoulder , heart , lung , rib and was just below skin on opposite side. I was impressed

If you have a 1/8 or 1/7 twist you could look at some 75g TAP or similar Academy has a real good selection of hunting bullets for the .223. All of the bullets listed above were on the shelf today.

Fusion/Gold Dot is highly recommended. And WalMart sells it.

I am a big fan of the Winchester power point I am sure there are better bullets but this does work and at a reasonable price

Hot Damm BigRon, I couldn't have said it better! Texans generally hunt over a feeder that is 75 yards away, if you think you need a .300WM to kill a 110lb Texas whitetail at 75yds, it ain't the caliber that is suspect! I've got a friend in the U.P. In michigan that only uses a .223AI with 62gr TSX's and every year kills deer that dwarf everything we have down here and hasn't lost a deer yet. Chupa

Every year from the age of 5 until I was 12 I shot my deer with a .223 that was shortened (stock and barrel). The farthest any of those deer ever went after being shot was about 16 feet. Even shot a couple Javelena and a racoon or two with it.
When I was 12 I moved up to the big leagues. My .257 Roberts.
This was a long time ago but we used Winchester silver tipped ammo and I don't remember the grain.

I would stay away from the Dynamic Research ammo that Academy now carries. I saw a show a couple of years ago and looked at their website and saw some of the devistation they created internally.
I got some and loaded them up for my son. He killed his first deer last year with that load but the deer went about 45 yards before keeling over in sight. There was absolutely no blood trail and only a .223 size hole in the deer. The inside looked like a bomb went off but I'm moving to Barnes bullets for this year.

Agree 100%. Deer are easy to kill light skinned animals, if you can't kill one with TSX or 75-77 you suck at shooting. Ive killed over 100 pigs with those loads and they are much harder to bring down than a deer. We used the 55gr Barnes TSX with good results. Both of my younger boys took their first deer with it.

BigRon we've never meet but I like the way you think. A lot of deer & hogs have fallen to my .224 Weatherby using the only factory available load, a Hornady 55 grain soft point. Big can be fun, and there certainly is a time and place for my 7mm STW or a .30-.378, but for me, feeder deer at less than 100 yards isn't it. To the OP I've seen very good results with 62 grain Federal Fusions. And at under $20 a box if you want a bigger hole or more knockdown power...just pull the trigger twice.

You're upset that a projectile that was designed to fragment and NOT exit, fragmented and DIDNT exit? DRT has a video footage of a doe shot with there projectile fired from a .50 BMG, it didn't exit either. Chupa

Thanks Everyone. I'll see what I can find tomorrow. I shoot a lot of silver bear 62 grain hp with it. I just got offered a spot to deer hunt so I thought I would see what rounds work best. Thanks Again

Thanks Again Almost all of the soviet ammunition utilizes a high antimony lead. Even though it says "HP ", don't expect much expansion from them. Chupa

I have only shot them in handloads but 64 grain PP's and 65 grain GameKings work very well if you can find them in factory ammo.
Don’t roll those bloodshot eyes at me.

Haha, very true! I bought a 30-30 and a guy told me "good luck tracking the deer after you shoot it..." It is just nuts how the large the calibers get when just deer hunting.

60gr partition, Federal loads it. Best option for a standard twist 223 in my opinion.
