With opening day of the general season now upon us, perhaps my post will help someone bring home a buck that they might have otherwise failed to harvest.

Shooting from the opposite shoulder is not that difficult, given you think to look through the scope with the opposite eye. I'm referring to shots taken in very close quarters from a tree stand when a deer walks up before you can turn around in your seat.

Any others worth sharing?

Worst mistake I have made was laying my gun in my lap pointing to my right (I'm right handed) while I sat against a tree, Rattling, I look to my left & staring at me is a nice shooter buck at about 50 yards, was through some trees but would have had a decent shot if the gun would have been ready for a right handed shooter!!! by the time I fumbled around, he was long gone. Not listening to that voice in your head telling you, "this isn't a very good idea!"

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Don't take uncomfortable shots. Don't move so the deer doesn't know you're there and things tend to turn out just fine.

When you're ready to hunt, load your rifle. I've spent many an hour still hunting only to discover back at the Jeep that I'd been carrying an unloaded rifle all that time. dunce

Don't leave the stand too early! Try to be the last man back to camp on morning hunts. I've seen all kinds of activity and taken some really nice deer that were obviously run my way by others going in for breakfast. Sure, they'll get a hot breakfast in camp and you'll get a cold biscuit, but you can get a good breakfast on the way to the processors.

As a safety measure, I don't chamber a round until I've settled into my stand. And for the same reason, I empty the chamber as the first move in getting ready to leave. I've adopted the practice since most shooting accidents occur when hunters are not in their stands but around vehicles and other places where firearms are being handled.

I can think of at least once when I went to empty the chamber before leaving, only to realize I had never chambered a round earlier. Thankfully, it didn't cost me a deer. Still, I continue the practice of waiting before clambering a round because I value safety more than deer.

I don't chamber a round until I'm going to shot on bolt rifles.

I was thinking the same thing. I know when I get in the stand if I have ammo or not because the first think I do is load the gun

Make sure you take ammo. I also load once in the stand. Last year I took a different rifle than usual, got in the stand and opened my bag to load it and didn't have a single round. I learned the hard way on taking a big one when you see him. I let a old 10pt walk two years ago on 11-13 at 0734am. Since then I have only seen him on camera. He won't be that lucky this year if he steps out.

Anyone here that would agree a buck can hear the click of a safety being clicked off and live to fight another day?
