New to hunting Texas and noticed there are a number of public spots that are archery only. Just curious if you hunt public or leased or mixed.

I mainly hunt lease land. Been public hunting a few times and I get an uneasy feeling not knowing where another hunter is or how safe they are, just my opinion.

I am pretty much hunt public all the time. Sometimes it is uneasy not knowing who is where and more importantly "who is who", but I can usually find a secluded spot. I recently moved from an area that I hunted for many years because it became more popular and was crowded -- just kinda part of the game.

Question: I see that for many public places it states that archery is either sex but once rifle season comes in most need an anther less permit, so if I bow hunt during rifle season can I still shoot a doe without a permit?

No. You will need a permit.

been hunting public since opening weekend and had multiple squirrel and rabbit hunters walk right near my stand ruining my hunt. oh well i gotta walk deeper in the woods i guess..
I don't always shoot deer, but when I do, I prefer B&C's. I don't always shoot ducks, but when I do, I prefer banded ducks.

I'm going to buy my first bow in the next couple of months in preparation for my first hunting season next year. I had wondered if it was worth trying to hunt public land.

I have hunted a lot of public ground in Oklahoma if hunting public I always tried to hunt during the work week and I always hunted before rifle season opened or after close. I never had any trouble with anyone and only occasionally ran into people and that was always out on the road.

Hunting public land is OK if you are willing to walk more than a half mile in. Most folks will stay within a few hundred yards of the road or where they park. I hunted Alazan Bayou WMA for many years and it was bow only for deer. The problem is that you can hunt squirrels with a gun and they are many times shooting up into the trees. We all know that the opening of squirrel season and the opening of bow season many times start on the same day. Make sure you wear your orange- you may not shoot at the first thing that moves but you can be sure you will have others in the woods with you that might.
