We moved 4 coveys, and pointed 1 skunk. I used moved very literally. Not much dog work. It looked as if the birds were still in family groups. The pasture was lush. They shot 3 quail and chased a few doves.
We're going back tomorrow morning and try again.

We're going back tomorrow morning and try again. Not trying to interrupt your thread, but I laughed aloud about the skunk. My partner's Brittany took a direct hit at point-blank range this morning, which pretty much ended his hunt. When he came up to me he was shivering, blinking his eyes, and actually had yellow-coloring on his muzzle where he got hit. I had a bottle of water, and washed his face the best I could, before my partner took his dog back to the truck. In hindsight, I wish I would have shot the skunk, but I guess I was more concerned about the dog at the time.

Bill, I know what you mean't about moving the birds. In a place that had very little cover at the end of last season, the grass was so thick and tangled, and above waist high. We walked and the dogs jumped thru it. They were stumbling over birds, more than scenting them. We gave it up by ten o'clock or so. I was worn out! I am not going to complain anymore because we are so thankful that we are finally getting some moisture after three years of drought, but Come On Killing Frosts!

Sound like skunk hunting is pretty good. I turn my skunk/porcupine dogs loose tomorrow.

Several times that skunks have sprayed my dogs in the past the dogs had no problems smelling quail right after this happened. No use to put the dog up let him hunt.

The worst skunk hit I've had was my old Brittany back in 04-05, he got hit from 6 inches in front of his nose, eyes were watering & he was rubbing his nose on the ground, his face was covered. We had a little puddle of water right by us so I called him over & rinsed his face a bit & told my buddy we might as well head for the truck, we didn't get 50 yards & he was on point. We hunted the rest of the day with him.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

Reminds me of hunting horseback on opening day 30 or so years past. A friend and I put down a big running EP (Slim)and right off the bat, he took a deer out and when he came back after about 30 minutes, he then pointed a skunk and received a face full, next up came a Porcupine. We hunted him the rest of the hunt smelling to high heaven along with a face full of quills. It didn't bother him a bit he still pointed birds. It was hot that day and he would road up to a windmill tank and load up on that gyppy water until he looked like he had swallowed a watermelon. If you've ever tanked up on Gyp water , you know what happened next. It was an explosion of S%&#. Oh yeah and we killed some birds too.
I can make 'em go! and I can make 'em whoa! God makes 'em DO! I carry the gun and blow the whistle.

I got rained out to this morning, but it turn into a good thing. I started puking my guts out about 9, and went back to bed. In fact going back to bed again sounds good.

Hey Tim, do you see any birds?
Did any of you guys include dove in your hunt? Bill, we made an afternoon dove hunt at a tank on Friday, and enjoyed quite a bit of shooting, although the birds didn't really begin coming to the tank in numbers until very close to official sunset. But we (2 of us) got 16 doves total, all mourning doves. Yesterday we were only able to make a morning hunt, which went by very quickly. The dogs found a large covey, at least 20 birds, within 100 yds of where we parked. The dogs had just locked up, before the covey flushed into an adjoining field. We followed, and the dogs pointed again, and the birds held just briefly before flushing, and this time we dropped 2 birds. After the skunk attack, my partner took his dog to the truck, and I followed my dog further into the field. He pointed briefly, before a huge covey (at least 35 birds) flushed, and I got 2 more. I'm not sure if it was 2 coveys that we ended up with, or just 1 huge one. They were all adult birds. Anyway, we headed home with 4 birds and the doves from Friday. Very pleased to see that many birds. Curious that they weren't holding, on opening day.

Saw two coveys this weekend lots of whistles early and more kroton in the pastures than I have ever seen. To tigger yes the country looks great, but could use another drink.

Went out to a small lease in Jefferson County on Sat. All of the pastures there are still flooded from last week's rains; in fact there is water over some of the levees, even. We found no birds, and heard no whistles; but did shoot 1 bw teal ... (we hunt with steel #6s or #7s there, for quail, dove, snipe or ducks). I'm hoping that whatever birds that were there have found some high ground safe from predators, (which also will be on high ground).

Never have put a dog up for it, but it WILL make you work around to his upwind side. ....and it amazed me how they can smell a bird through that skunk piss.

Scenting conditions are terrible here. I assume they are the same where you are at and it does make a difference.
