Sounds like it's getting stuck in the chamber. Point your gun at the ground and drop the metal end in. See if that helps keep it in the middle of the barrel.

It fits in he bore but won't make it all the way through? If that is the case and it is a 5.56 snake it sounds like you have some serious build up. Might want to get a copper brush and some solvent.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

First, make sure the metal part of the snake has .22 stamped on it. Small diameter bores result in a relatively light weight on the end of the snake. Jiggle the snake repeatedly and it should eventually make it through the bore. After the first snaking, it will slide through easily.

Make sure and check that it's a .223 bore snake. I've never had a problem getting mine through. You've either got the wrong size snake, a ton of fouling/buildup, or a bullet or some other debris in your bore.

Don't mean to be insulting.......
Open upper up from lower. Place metal/brass end into chamber and slide down an inch or so. Pick up the opposite end of bore snake higher than chamber and straight inline with bore. You should be able to lower the end until the brass end comes out. You may need to shake a bit or push a bit with cleaning rod. Mine was tight but went thru fine. Look down barrel and make sure there's no obstruction. Once thru with chem/ oil on it, it will be easier next time.

I have had dozen bore snakes through the years and never had any trouble until recently. I bought a 22 cal a month or so ago and it wouldn't pass through the barrel. I think the brass end of the snake was slightly bent or out of spec.
