A question for the masses:

I am selling a gun through the forum and I have a potential buyer. Communication has been nice and polite, no worries.

He wants a bill of sale when he picks up the rifle, which is no problem, I got one when I bought it 2 years ago off a guy on here.

My question is, he also wants a picture of my ID and I can have a picture of his. Is this normal. When I have bought guns, I have never asked for the sellers ID info. Thoughts?

I've done the Bill of sale when I was the seller and the buyer. But we only showed each other our I.D.s, did not give a copy of each other. I don't think I would, either.

I am trying to be easy to work with but when you dont know the guy, and I have a family to think about and protect. Just making sure I am not too paranoid and figure out protocol

I honestly wouldn't since it contains your address. I would be willing to show it but not give a copy. Even though this is a show me yours and I'll show mine I would just walk away.

Nope.

I will NOT leave a copy of my ID. I don't care if he gives me a copy of his, only way I leave a copy is with a licensed dealer and a 4473 is involved. I would walk away from the deal.

He may not know you, but that goes both ways. Visually verify if you must, complete the deal and leave.

I'd suggest that both parties should be comfortable with seeing each other's ID and a signed copy of the bill of sale with names and drivers license numbers for each party.

I have looked online and a number of templates for firearm bill of sale do areas for both seller and buyer address and dl#

There are some that just have names and signature

There isn't a good reason for either of you to have a copy of the other's DL. If the bill of sale contains a name and address and the serial number of the weapon that should be plenty to keep either of your skins out of trouble. I understand why he's paranoid about it and I wouldn't have a problem letting someone verify my name and address by looking at my DL, but that's about as far as I would go. If he's really hung up on having a copy of your DL I would suggest to him that the bill of sale should be notarized. The notary won't stamp unless he or she is satisfied that whoever executed the bill of sale is who he says he is.

I think I would have a prob giving a copy of my id to someone I did not know. take the gun to a pawn shop together, and just do it through an ffl. should not cost you more than 25.00 or so.

That's all you need to find out anything from a LEO database.

If you think about it, any party who demands a level of ID would be willing to provide the same. The info protects each party equally and any rules are fair as long as everyone's subject to the same rules. I won't sell to, or buy from, anyone who makes me uncomfortable. I guess we all have some idea of what's appropriate and I certainly would never provide a SSN, but up to that point it's all about reciprocity. I've never dealt with anyone on THF that gave me reason to pause. I think I'm a pretty good judge of character and I can tell pretty quickly if I'm dealing with someone who's like me. I trust my instincts.

Well, I recently met a THF member along side the road out in the country. We exchanged pleasantries and showed what we had to trade. Looked good and called it a deal. One of us drove away Eastbound, the other, Westbound. Believe both to be smiling at departure.

Yes. But I'm armed every time, anyway.

In my previous life, I went into unknown situations so much, I don't think much about it. Just go prepared. up

Randy, if I met with you on a county road, I'd leave the pistol in the truck, same as tth_40. But those I don't of, well, I'm armed.

Just go prepared is how I try to live every day.

Back in my UC days, I had a pistol under each leg so I could get to a gun with either hand.
These were street corner buys so never had to exit the car, just pass the cash, get my stash and go.
Somebody knows where I am going and who it is I am supposed to be meeting. I call them when the deal is done and I am driving away.
Usually have a phone number for the person I am meeting. It is on paper with a name on my desk at home.

Sometimes I call Big Orn for back up. He can swing thru the trees with the greatest of ease......

I don't mind flashing an ID, it could just be so the seller knows you're of age to own a gun, but I will NEVER provide a paper copy of it.
