Yes. I haven't found any place in DFW that can hold a candle to it. The wait is absolutely ridiculous now, but I heard that opened a second register for anyone ordering 5 lbs or more. Next time I go, I will just plan to bring a bunch home so I don't have to wait in line.

fyi.... folks I went to Big Boy's in Sweetwater b/c I hunt near there in Merkel.... they have been in Texas Monthly the last few times. I guess b/c they are out in an area that has terrible bbq.

I was very unimpressed. They didn't know what I was talking about when I asked for brisket from the point. And their ribs were way under cooked. The brisket had to been a day old at least.

That is my go-to bbq place in DFW. Only a few blocks from where we attend church, so we got there at least once a month.

My middle daughter and her hubby arrived last night from Austin to spend Easter weekend with us. They brought 7 pounds of BBQ from Franklin's before they left Austin. My SIL got in line at 7:35 Friday morning and waited until 11:40 to get served. That would be a 4-hr wait for BBQ.

Last night, we had a Good Friday meat fest.

I'm thinking this SIL may actually be worthy of my daughter.....

We were on Lake LBJ last weekend with friends, went to a place in Kingsland called Spykes just east of the FM1431 bridge over the Colorado arm ... I had combo brisket & jalapeno sausage, wife had pork ribs. Brisket was pretty good (not in my top 20) but not overly smokey (which I like overly smokey) in flavor, tender and moist, and the jalapeno sausage was good but didn’t have much smoke at all that I could tell. My wife’s pork ribs were tender and moisture, good texture and good flavor, little smoke which suits my wife fine (could use more for me). Came with two sides, options were beans (very good), potato salad (very good), pasta salad (didn’t try, but looked good) or Cole Slaw (didn’t try, mayonnaise based). Decent little joint, friendly servers/workers but could definitely use more smoke on the meat in my opinion but as stated, wife really liked it.

Stillwater BBQ just opened here in Abilene. Kid had a food truck that he operated for a couple years and decided to haul off and open a restraunt. He's been killing it since he opened. He's only open for lunch and has been selling out every day. He's on his way to make a run at Pecan lodge and Franklins fame...had a pulled pork sammich that is the bomb. Brisket Mac and cheese is tasty too.

Bringing this back to the top ... I hit the Purple Pig BBQ in Kingsland Texas over the weekend. Brisket was very good, nice bark & smoke ring, tender and moist. The sausage was okay, reminded me of Ekrich brand but cooked on the smoker alongside the brisket to give it a nice smokiness. My wife had brisket & turkey and she raved about the turkey, tender, smoky, moist. I am typically not much of a BBQ sauce type, especially the sweeter type but theirs was off the hook good!!! Some might think it to be a bit on the ketshupy side but it was a rich dark color, nice smoke and tangy, a touch of sweetness but not overbearing. Sides of potato salad and cole slaw were both very good.

My son and I (10 yrs.) did the Lockhart 3-Step one day by buying a brisket sandwich from Kreuz's, Blackies, and Smitty's; all 3 within an hour and 1/2. Once done we each ranked them 1,2, and3 on a piece of paper. When done, our list were identical; Smitty's #1, Kreuz #2, and Blackies #3. We had so much fun hanging out and ended up going back to Smitty's and buying sausage and a few pounds of brisket to take back home for the rest of the family. Yes, we had to buy Smitty shirts also!! Looking forward to trying Pecan Lodge and Franklins someday soon.

True. According to the McKinney location they are only doing lunch at this time though.

Finally had a Friday off where I could go try Cattleack Barbecue for lunch. They are primarily a catering company in Dallas, but serve lunch on Thursday and Friday. I got there at 10:45 and there was a good 20 people in front of me, but the line moved fast. I ordered The Toddfather (sandwich with pulled pork, sliced brisket, a split hot link, and slaw) and also ordered 1/2 pound each of brisket, turkey, and spare ribs. The brisket and turkey were well above average for the DFW area, but the ribs were somewhat of a disappointment (a little too chewy for my liking). I rarely order bbq sandwiches, but I might order more if they were all as good as the Toddfather. The brisket had a nice bark and good smoke to it, the pulled pork was very flavorful, and the hot link gave it a little kick. Not usually a sauce guy either, but I put some on the sandwich and thought it was pretty decent too.

New barbecue take-out restaurant in Merkel. Ely's Pit-Stop BBQ. It is good.

Mesquite Bean in Merkel closed down and the building is gone, but Urban Bright still cooks steak and fish at his Trent Country Club on Friday and Saturday evenings.

After hearing all of the rave reviews on this forum about Kruez Mkt in Lockhart, we decided to stop there on our way to Port A. We were second in line, I ordered 1/4 lb brisket, two ribs and green beans. Gotta tell you guys; Dissapointed! Although both had good (not great) flavor, both were on the dry side and not very tender. I can now say been there, done that but will not go back!

Dang! Hate to hear that. Kruez has always been known for their sausage. But brisket and ribs are the mainstay of any Texas BBQ joint. Hopefully, it was just a bad day...maybe the pit master was sick. Not good, however.....

Here is the “tree view” of all the Texas BBQ restaurants in Texas that have websites that the volunteer editors at dmoz have found so far. An even 250 at the moment (websites go dead all the time).
