Will we be okay in a 2wd? How bad do kansas roads get in snow? We do not need to go offroad... just stay on the road.

We are back and forth about buying a 4x4 suburban

Depends on where in Kansas. If your in western Kansas the roads are graded sand. When they get wet they turn to slime. Even in a 4x4 it can be tough. It don't take snow to make them slick just a little rain and your sliding. No way would I go without 4 wheel drive unless your going to stay on pavement

Hunting anywhere is just a good reason to talk yourself into a 4x4. "I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it!"

Those are some of the slickest roads I've ever driven, and I grew up in the mountains. That fine dust gets just a little rain and its like driving on an oil slick.

I hunted the Protection Kansas area last year with no problems with a 2wd truck and some guys even flew in and had rent cars. If it rains you might have 1 day of problems. 2wd should be fine in most areas.

Just stay in the ruts and pray you don't meet someone. The low or silted areas may give you problems. Most counties are good about grading roads quickly after rain so they stay in pretty good shape. It will keep the dust down at least.
The roads that people live on and are school bus routes are kept up a bit better in the counties I hunted in.

It is better to have and not need rather than need and not have.

I hunted all over North Dakota for 3 years out of a 1957 Ford Fairlane. 2 wheel drive isn't the problem, the driver without common sense will be what gets you in trouble.

Been up there 8 yrs in a row in 2WD. Never had a problem. Also, never been up there when they have snow. If you are going for the rifle season, don't think you will have much of a problem. May not be any snow that early in the year.

I'm just south of western ks, if there is moisture, I park my 3/4 ton 4x4, and borrow 1/2 4x4. Its not the roads its the ditches if you slide off the road. I can't count how many times I've been pulled out with a tractor, nor can i count the times I've returned the favor, way to many.

If the roads are frozen its better then then being wet.

I say you go buy a 2000 4x4 suburban. Especially if you have an awesome hunting partner! JS

I learned lesson hard way. Dumb driver mistake. I got stuck on dirt road in ditch on inclined road. Go buy you a 4x4

My thoughts exactly. I'll never go back to 2WD

Usually try to avoid situation in my personal truck where 4wd is a must, but when you find yourself in a bind its nice to just push a button and go.

You sound like my buddy, his F-150 V-6 could pull a tank in his eyes...he has offered to pull tractors to lease before! he just gives it hell and gets through most!
