Thanks. I have for 4 to 5 days but I am being told it is un healthy. I alway keep plenty of ice and keep the bloody water drained. It's not ideal but I have never had it spoil in that time period.

The best meat you'll ever eat has been aged 14 or more days at a higher temp than ice water. Remember that when someone tries to feed u a line of bs.

Y'all keep talking about keeping the deer on ice for several days and draining the bloody water and in the same breath others talk about not getting the meat wet. Not trying to be ignorant but HOW are you doing that. I've always kept mine in 2 gallon, open top baggies.

It really depends on the outside weather and how much ice is on your game. If its 110 outside and your putting 1 bag of ice in the cooler, I would suspect 1 to 2 days tops. Just keep your meat packed in ice and keep the water drained and you can get away with more time. I personally dont like to go over 3 days even under good conditions. Too much chance of bacteria growth and spoiled meat for my liking.

Also keep in mind what is introduced to the meat via the cooler, gut shot, knife, or dirt. I guess just get it off the ice and into the freezer asap. I would try and stay 4 or under. Any more and id be worried. Not saying more than that is bad but with every day the risk risk escalate.

A controlled atmosphere is quite a bit different that a cooler of ice. Just sayin...

This is also why I hate processers that make community ground. You may believe that your meat should be at the processer the day your game is shot, while others believe a week or so is sufficient. Something to think about...

I always go 8-10 days in cooler. Just drain water daily and keep full of ice. Heck ,just look how long busy processors take to get your deer back to you. Or even better ,how long do people think food ( beef, pork, chicken) in grocery stores has been in cooler when you buy it. As long as it is drained of bloody water daily and kept loaded with ice you can keep in cooler for 14 days but personally I never go past 10 because after 7 days of draining and adding ice all the blood that's coming out will be out.

I've kept a deer iced for 10 days no problems. Even after that some of it was kept in my frige for 5 days passed that. 15 days is the longest I've kept deer with out freezing or making jerky out of it. Once the blood drains and it stays dry the speed of spoilage drops as long as it stays 40 degrees or colder. When I ice it in the cooler I place it on a rack that sits 2 inches from the bottom so water can drain out and nothing blocks the drain on the cooler. I keep 40 to 60 pounds of Ice on it constantly.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

A good clean cooler that's kept drained and full of ice remains at a very cold controlled temp if done right. Just sayin....
