Hard to tell from those pics if it is the same buck. Would need a ear or face or color marking on him to know for sure. My guess would be no. IME most spikes tend to be odd pointed at 2,3, to 4 yrs old when they do grow more points, not always but most of the time. Not unusual to see a buck or two still in velvet the first week of Oct.

I have seen older bucks in South Texas with velvet the first week of November on 2 different occasions in the past.

The spike at protein his whole life and the 2 6pts showed up later and I guessed they were twins and the three were still running together. IDK

More pics of the bigger 8 that still looks as young as the smaller 8s.

There is no way it's the same buck. Once a spike, always a spike...

stir Here we go.

trout No the only way to know for sure is to kill all spikes that way you know none of the bucks left at older ages were a spike. stir

If that buck in the top pics is the same buck as in the in second set of pics the 5th buck down I would say no it not the spike from last year. That 8 point actually looks to be a 3 yr old in that 5th pic on 09-02-13 8:02:26. When I could see an ear notch or color marking on a spike that I was sure was the same buck the next year, they always were a 3 point, 5 point or 7 point at 2 or 3 yrs old. With yearling bucks it is so hard to tell what they will look like the next year without a mark on them some place to indentify. Just because the run together does not mean they will always run together every year. The 3rd set of pics with the buck with the notched right ear is the same buck IMO due to the ear marking. He also had 7 points as a yearling and most of the time 7 point or better yearlings have 8 or more points at 2 the next year. They just are a better buck.
I also have lot of bucks on my place this year that have notches or marking in one or both ears. I can not find any bucks from last year so far with those same markings and I know all my bucks from last year did not die and all new bucks moved in. I will take more time when I get good pics this season to compare bucks to see how many I know from last year and what they look like this year.
