correct me if i'm wrong but axis don't pass along their genes (antler wise) the same way whitetails do
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Why would you say that? It was my understanding from talking to breeders that a big antlered axis may not sire big antlered offspring, even if the does came from a good daddy This is what I've been told by several breeders, but not saying its gospel

Big antlers are grown on trees or in a bag?

Sorry, that is not true. Genetics play a large part. You can easily see this in populations that have certain genetic traits - stickers, big cottles, etc. But there are no guarantees. Good genetics can produce some inferior bucks - and sometime a whopper can appear in the population with average genetics. But GENERALLY, genetics breed genetics.
That pic is of VERY nice axis. Especially the cottles.
One thing that folks don't typically understand is that axis naturally live 12-15 years free range, and sometimes close to 19-20 in breeder/HF places. They will grow 90% of the antlers by 5-6 years, HOWEVER they will continue to add mass and length until they die. So while WT may be in decline or even nearing death at 7yo, axis are just middle aged then.
Those 35" axis at 6-7yo, could reach 40" if they can survive another 7-8 years. Texas grow the biggest axis in the world, even bigger than their native India. However, most on HF are hunted and harvested by the time they get 6-8. But some of the largest in Texas are actually very old free range animals.
But back to the OP - that is one fine axis. It has it all!!! Width, length, mass, and exceptional cottles. You'd be hard pressed to top that even if you spent years pursuing.
It wouldn't surprise me if this buck wasn't closer to 10+ years. I say this because the tips are starting to curl in. This is something I've typically seen on very old axis.

Very interesting John, thanks for your insight. This is good to know, he might get several more years if thats the case. I am interested to see what he does in the next year on free fed protein year round.

AMAZING looking axis. I have taken 2 36"in myself, but that is a STUD of a deer. Is your ranch located in Midland county ? I ask because I am from there as well. I would def be interested in taking him if he ever came available.

I will keep everyone in mind if we ever decide to hunt him, but it'll probably be several years from now. Thanks for your interest.

this is something I have learned as well. you cannot harvest them like you do your whitetail based on age

Why can't you kill them at a certain age? Harvest corn, he hehe! John not saying your info is completely wrong but we bred and raised axis for quite some time and they were very close to a Whitetails decline in antler growth after 6-7 years of age. At that point they picked up some trash and mass but overall beam and tine length declined. Before I left Porters place my dad took a 8.5 year old axis buck that had gone down quite a bit from last two years. Granted I'm just one place and others may have different experiences but in raising 150+ axis for live sale we never saw a continual incline of growth after a typical maturity age. I do however share your belief that they can live into their teens.
