Somebody told me if you don't cook it exactly right it will poison you. Now I don't normally listen to this self proclaimed expert but I figured I'd ask. Anybody have any thoughts

No thoughts on it being poisonous, but I ate some many years ago and it wasn't good enough to make me try it again.

Never tried it but have heard it needs to be fully cooked.

no, it won't kill you....to make it taste good, you have to cook the hell out of it to get it edible, and its still questionable whether or not it is. the only good way to cook bear is, put it in a crock pot for 6798 hours smothered in BBQ sauce.

Bear meat is like pork in that eating it under cooked can give you trichinosis. So, cook it in the same way that you would cook a wild hog.

Since black bears are omnivorous, and at times completely carnivorous, they have a higher probability of contracting trichinellosis. Trichinella is found in the muscle tissue so it can be passed from animal to animal by eating one another. Mountain lions and cougars would also be likely candidates for these as they are carnivorous. There is a minimum cook temp like any other meat to get rid of it, and sometimes even freezing it for several weeks can take care of it.

I have had trichinosis. Believe me you don't want any of that bag of hurt. There's not much they can do for you either.
To be determined

Either what you were told is complete B.S. or my father in law is a dang good cook. I had a bear roast the first time I met my wife (not even my girlfriend at that point & time, but that's a story for another day). He had cooked it in the oven and it had a mustard & horseradish sauce on top of it. It was amazing. I don't have any idea of the exact recipe nor do I know how to cook one myself, however I leave for Colorado in less than 24 hours to take down a bear, elk & mulie. If I get lucky and get a bear, I'll keep you posted if I have the same success as my father in law did at cooking one.

I plan on hunting in Oklahoma next year for one, just wondering if a mount is all I was gonna get out of it or if the meat was worth anything.

Black bear is very good if it is handled and cooked right. The one I killed last year was made into ring bologna and breakfast sausage and turned out great!! Its like anything else, if you prepare and cook it right, it will be good!!
