Try to make this my last lever action ????

more than I want to spend on a gun, but anyone have experience with these?????

I like the 30.06 idea to keep just one kind of rifle ammo... Think the gun itself is any good? Can get one locally for a little more than the cost in the link with gaurantee, proof shoot stamp, and zero sighting/service.... Not quite a marlin or winchester look, but not bad... What do you think?

BLR

The BLR is an excellent lever gun. Magazine fed so bullet selection is no problem. The two in my family are very smooth cycling. One shoots MOA and the other about 1.5 with factory ammo. The only issue is they don't have that cowboy look that most people associate with a lever gun.

No quality comparison issues of a new from the store today compared to one 10+ years ago like you hear about marlins and winchesters?

I have one in 7mm and used it for several years. It has a heavy trigger and is not a MOA shooter but it sure brings down deer and yotes. The trigger is the only negative I have found, it will never be as light as some bolt guns.

I have had one in .243 and loved it. The only problem I had with it is if you cycled the action too quickly like you can on a marlin 336 it would jam up.

I had one in 308 for a couple of years. I found it to be trouble free, shot pretty well and carried great. My only issue was that I couldn’t take it down far enough for my liking as Browning pretty much states that taking out the lever is a guaranteed trip to the gunsmith to get it put back together.

I previously owned a .308 straight stock and currently own a .325 pistol grip takedown model. My personal belief is that the short action model balances much better than the long action. I strongly suggest that you handle both before purchasing a long action model, although many do seem to like the long action. The trigger is fairly heavy, but will smooth out somewhat if you spend half an hour or so thumbing the hammer and dry firing it. The stock comb is also a bit low for optimal scope usage, as the irons are actually meant to be functional.

The takedown model is pretty slick. You have two scope mounting choices: the conventional mount on the receiver or a scout style mount on the barrel. The scout scope allows you to remove and replace the barrel without rezeroing. That said, the rifle balances much better with the receiver mount. I've also had significant parallax issues with the scout scopes at ranges over 100 yards; but that may just be me.

The choice of pistol grip vs straight stock really comes down to personal preference. I think the pg is a bit better if mounting a scope, and the straight stock is a bit better if using irons or a peep sight, but I like both quite well. The BLR is a quality rifle and you will enjoy it greatly if you understand the quirks before you buy.

Had a 308 few years back. Loved it, but always dropped the mag for some reason.

My father shoots one in 308 and he swears he's never getting rid of the thing. Iirc, 1st 2 shots always go in same hole every time then barrel heats up and they start spreading after that.

This is accurate. The barrels have a very slim profile and heat up quickly. These are hunting rifles not target rifles.

Great Rifles! I have one in 358 Winchester. Personally I don't care for the long action version, doesn't handle well for me but may be fine for you. And yes the trigger leaves a bit to be desired but does get better with use. Mine is a newer alloy frame with the pistol grip, I installed a 2-7X32 Leuplod on mine and really like it.

'71 vintage .308 an hour ago.
i wouldn't take for it.

I started deer hunting as a kid with a blr in 22-250. Killed about 4-5 deer with it, then went to a blr in 308 and killed about 10 deer with it until I got my own rifles. Great guns. Not lights out shooters, but excellent hunting rifles for a lever gun.

For a 30-30 no. But for a non traditional lever caliber like 7-08, 308 etc yes.

Assuming you are only looking at lever guns

I have had my BLR in .308 short action for over 10 yrs. Only problems Ive had have been with the trigger assembly. Actually had a spring fall out of it and had to send it back to browning to fix after the gunsmith couldnt do it and he put several marks and scratches on the reciever. ( gunshop is no longer in business, i wonder why) I have cycled and shot it fast several times and never had an issue with it jamming, actually took out 3 running hogs with 5 shots( 1 miss and 2 of the bullets hit the same one) last year.
