I am going to buy a polaris ranger new from a dealer in Oklahoma. Doing so will allow me to not pay sales tax. Do I have to then title it in Texas? Will I have to pay sales tax in Texas if I do so? Thanks for the help!

Im thinking if you plan on using it mostly in texas and you live in texas you are going to run into problems if you don't title it.

When I bought my ranger in 2008 the dealer told me that the state no longer supplied a title. However if you supply the dealer with a Texas address the odds are he will make you pay taxes.

Thanks for the help! When you buy it the dealer will forward the title info to Tx authorities. You can then title it in TX. You do not have to pay sales tax in TX. You will have to pay some sort of origination fee of about $60. I just went thru this 3 months ago.

Agree, bought one there a few months ago, when they send you a title from the dealer, take it to tax office and pay $30 (I think) transfer fee, NO sales tax since you are offroad only. Saves a chunk of change--the local Dallas dealers tried to tell me I would have to pay the sales tax upon transfer, but I called tax office and they confirmed no sales tax on offroad vehicle title transfer.. Easy transactions.

It's best to go ahead and title it if you're ever planning on transporting it. I know of several people that have been pulled over with one in their truck and asked to prove ownership. It's easier if they can search it in the system.

If its insured and stolen you will need a title to hand over to the insurance company in return for a check. Mine was covered under my homeowners policy as a "work with it around my 2 acres" type vehicle. They would not have covered a "recreational use vehicle" according to my agent.

ATVs & SxS's purchased out of state are not taxed here in Texas. I went by the local tax office to find out myself. A $28 transfer fee is what you will pay to have a title in your hand. The dealership may just give you a MSO so you can get it transferred to you. I wonder just how long it will be this way????

If you buy from a dealer or private party out of State, you only pay the title fee in Texas, $38 after all the fees. You do not need a form 130-U signed by them, but need a bill of sale showing sales price. You will still need to fill out the 130-U so print out at home and fill out in advance to save time. Check the Title Fee Box and Exemption Box. In Exemption Box, write in "Off Highway Use Only"
If you buy from a private party in Texas, just the $38 fee as above, but they must also sign a form 130-U, so have one handy.
If you buy from a dealer or company in Texas, you pay the above title fee plus Sales Tax, 8.25% where I live. If a licensed dealer, they will collect all taxes and fees and have you sign the 130-U, then they will submit to DMV. If you buy from company that is not a licensed dealer, you may or may not have to pay sales tax, but will need them to sign the 130-U regardless for you to submit to DMV with signed over title.

I'm doing the same thing. Took my bill of sale and U130 form to the tax office yesterday and they required a pencil etching of the VIN. there is an online form you can print and take with you. It is VERY hard to get a pencil etching of a Polaris VIN. The VIN is put on in a series of dots instead of a stamp or engraving and does not etch well. I took a picture to take along with the etching. At lease in the pic the numbers are all visible. Hope they take it this time

I bought my Honda Rancher in Oklahoma this year and they saved me around $1500 over any Texas dealer I contacted.

Oh don't think the state of Texas doesn't think you owe them sales tax. Just because the auto registration folks don't collect their 6.25% when you pay your registration, doesn't mean the state doesn't think you owe sales tax...usually 8.25%. The auto reg folks don't collect tax on quads/SXS because they are the on road, not off road registration people. Now do they have the wherewithal to catch you and collect? I doubt it, but they do know you by your 38 buck registration.

You can only claim farm use if you have the proper tax ID. I tried to buy one for my dad and the dealer gave me hell about it since The card wasn't in my name even though we were titling it in his name
