Just wondering how the donkeys are going to get along with the dog. Most of the donkeys Ive seen that are ran with cattle will kill a dog.

He has 3 dogs already that wont keep yotes away.. the donkeys and lama dont car about the dogs ..

My brother has a Pyrenesse/Lab cross. The dog is tiger striped and about the size of a Lab. She guards his organic gardens at night to keep the deer and other critters out. She hates coyotes and more than one has left trailing blood.

Something a bit faster and just as protective is a (Belgian) Malinois... they can be quite expensive but they are as smart as a german shepherd and faster... they are a bit smaller but they should be able to handle coyotes easily. If he gets a dog that will run them off the others will probably join him after some time.

Cheaper option i believe in anatolians.

I've got a belguan malinois, and he has been the easiest dog i have ever had to train. He does a great job killing and chasing off coyotes from my livestock when he goes out on the weekends. He's also great on a blood trail.

To bad my black mouth cur is probably to small for a guard dog. She needs a big pasture to get out. She def has the energy and stamina

Our ranch forman has a cur and she is plenty strong enough for a guard dog. Dang good dog and protects the family, chickens, and pretty much the whole barn yard...she does have a 100# lab backing her up, but even he is terrified when she turns on him.

Herding type dogs don't typically make great guardian dogs.

If your buddy is looking for something to stay with stock night and day and doesn't want the hair, you were given a good recommendation of going with an Anatolian Shepherd, we've had three and not lost a single goat or sheep since they were old enough to really start working.

Ours didn't care what the weather was or if they had eaten if the herd didn't come to the barn at night they didn't eat, they would not leave them.

Curs are a great all purpose breed IMO. I've seen them do everything from Schutzhund to Coondoggin. If you are worried about them and Coyotes or Bobcats, don't. people will hunt cats with them all the time back in TN. Next best thing to a good big Black and Tan Coonhound. If you are still worried, get 2... If 2 curs won't handle it, you need a big gun in a hurry.

All in all though the standard choice for best is probably the Anatolian.

My grandfather always had 2 dogs guarding livestock. A large mutt he would rescue from the shelter and whatever english pointer pup from the litter that ended up being gun shy. For some reason the pointers were always mean as hell to anything not in the family. The neighbors pit got out one time when we were kids and got too close to us for the dogs liking. I had never seen it react like it did. It tore the dog to shreds. Another time saw it chase down a coyote that was stalking the goats/sheep. Great guard dogs.
