Look like Burr Oak to me as well.

They are some of the largest native acorns around and come from exceptionally slow growing trees.

Do you have a pic of a leaf from the tree? It also looks similar to a Chinquapin.

Burr oaks are considered SLOW growth rate trees whereas Live Oaks are considered to be RAPID.

I have a Burr Oak next to my driveway and right now it is like walking on golf balls when I go to get in the truck.
I took some out to my lease a couple years ago and nothing touched them.

I have a to disagree with the bur being slow growing, especially slower than a live oak. I have a Bur in my backyard. It's was much smaller than the live oaks in the neighborhood when I planted it and 7 years later it is larger than the same live oaks. According the Neil Sperry says it has a moderate growth rate and Howard Garret calls it a fast growing oak.

I too, was curious as to whether or not deer eat them. We have quite a few at school and I thought about picking up a bunch and putting them out but then there is the scent that might be a factor. My guess is i would actually need some trees on site for the best outcome.

I have a buddy with a Burr Oak or two in his yard. The squirrels love those acorns. Surely deer would want them too.

I was going to transplant a small Burr Oak over to my place, but I found that you can't easily do that, due to the very long tap root. Gotta grow them on site from an acorn, or at least that's what I read. I would not plant one in my yard, due to my wife's zero turn possibly shooting big acorns through a window.

Burr oak acorns are a very attractive food source for deer. They are also a pretty fast growing tree if all is right.

My thoughts too, definitely faster than live oaks. Didn't figure it was worth arguing about though.

If you got white oaks or post oaks, most deer will prefer them over the burr oaks. On the bright side, the deer will hit the burrs before the hickory. Acorns equal cheap feeder!

I completely agree with you two. My grandmother planted several burr oaks in her yard that were sprouted from acorns. One was planted when I was 10 and is now about 15 inches in diameter. Im only 27... that tree grew way faster than the liveoaks. If you keep live oaks watered with all the water they want they will grow fast as well.
