Was at the range today getting my rifle ready for the season Nikon Monarch A++++.

Anyways, a boy, his father and grandfather came to the range to get their new rifle sighted in. It was a brand new rossi in a believe .243. After covering the entire shooting board with about 9 sqaure feet of paper they were trying to get the rifle sighted in. They had federal premium ammunition and and shooting 3-4 shots, a few of which were totally off the board, they Dad told his Son, "Sorry your not hunting tomorrow". I felt absolutely terrible for this kid (7-8 years old) I know the father was very aggitated he just picked up the rifle and can't return it but wow, what a terrible situation.

So the moral of the story is you absolutely get what you pay for, and I have heard of a few examples of people getting somewhat lucky but, don't risk a season buying a half___ rifle.

Based on talking to a few people, and reading a lot of posts regarding Rossi single shots, it seems they either shoot half way decent, or are totally worthless. What a terrible waste to ruin a young boy's deer season because of a crappy rifle. I truly wish Academy would severe their ties with Rossi on buying these pieces of junk.

Was it really the rifle?

Think about it! These guys show up the day before the season to sight in a brand new rifle.

What kind of hunters do that? inexperienced ones would be my guess, and then the poor kid being told he won't be hunting in the morning is just mean, and shows their true colors.

They are abviously not that dedicated to the sport if that's what they are doing by waiting until the last minute.

I don't care how bad a rifle is but if it's anywhere near as you describe, they should have been able to hit the paper unless they just didn't know what they were doing which seems to be the case.

Lot of things to consider with this one, but I would bet just from your description it wasn't only the rifle!

I completely agree with Jimbo!
My Rossi is a graet gun, and I would never wait til the last minute to prepare myself or my equipment!

1 MORE THAT SAYS DON'T BLAME THE GUN JUST YET..
A BUDDY AND I WENT TO THE RANGE SUNDAY, HE HAD A 300 WM HE HAD JUST BOUGHT (USED) WITH A SIMMONS 3X9. HE COULDNT EVEN HIT PAPER, I PUT UP 4 TARGETS AND TOOK TURNS SHOOTING AT THE CORNERS UNTIL I FOUND THAT IT WAS SHOOTING 15" AT 2:00.
SO I GOT THE SCOPE ADJUSTED DOWN TO 2" @ 12:00 AND GAVE IT TO HIM TO FINE TUNE, AFTER A COUPLE OF SHOTS HE DISCOVERED THAT THE SCREWS HOLDING THE RINGS TO THE BASE WERE WAAAY LOOSE. HE HAND TIGHTENED THEM, THREW THE GUN BACK IN THE CASE AND PROCLAIMED "DANGED CHEAP A-- SIMMONS SCOPE"

BOTTOM LINE, UNLESS YOU ARE THE ONE SHOOTING AN REALLY CHECK THE PROBLEM, IT COULD BE THE GUN, THE SCOPE, THE AMMO, THE MOUNTS OR A LOOSE NUT ON THE TRIGGER.

Ever notice how the people who make negative comments or bash a certain firearm or any product for that matter don't even own one?

Not saying they are all great rifles right out of the box, but just like any brand out there you will find one that slipped through the process and may not be up to snuff, and that's why all successful companies give you a customer service 1-800 number.

All in all, they are decent little guns for the price, and will get the job done, and you only have to put a smidgeion of effort into it!

They sell a lot of them, and have been selling them for a long time.

Don't think they would be in business long if they were as bad as some people make them out to be!

No I don't personally have one. However, when I worked at academy we had a customer that wanted to send one back to Rossi. No problem at all got the paper work sent out and took care of it for the guy. Well rossi "test shot" the gun. At 25 yards they managed a 2-3" group and said passes their shooting standards.

Now, the original owner did replace the rings bases and put a leupold rifleman scope on it. So yes in that case the rifle was just useless.

So, when I saw basically the same thing happen to the guy at the range I made the connection to say maybe these rifles really aren't too great.

And why would you buy a 199.99 rifle if you have to replace the scope rings and bases seems like you could at least get into a NEF handi rifle for 100 more and have a quality firearm. But what do I know.

So maybe the moral of the store is don't purchase a rossi, boresight it and think you have a reliable rifle for the season.

Sounds like it was an opportunity to step up and offer a hand possibly. You might have been able to help them zero it in and save the day for the youngster. Dad and gramps might have been opposed to the little guy hunting and were looking for an excuse or were inexperienced themselves. I'm always willing to offer help or an opinion if I think i can help in any way, but that's just me. Hopefully that rifle doesn't end up in the back of the closet for the next twenty years rusting up and the kid get's a new game console instead of heading to the woods.
Just my thoughts, that's all.......

had a buddy that bought one of those remington package deals in a 243 and just could not get it to shoot straight. he was bashing remington till i noticed one of the rings wasn't tight and then it shot great. had someone else at the range had a rossi single shoot and it would not sight it. i took a look at it because i was also sighting in my rossi for my girls (that shoots great by the way) i noticed the man had put a different scope on it and every time the hammer came down it was hitting the scope, so much it left marks on the scope. no way that gun was going to shoot right. i moved the scope bore sight it for him and it took only a few rounds to get it sighted in. moral of the story - i dont really have one. except most of the time its not the rifle its the operator and its just easier to blame the rifle.

I once drank muddy water out of a hoof print and was dang glad to get it.

rab is spot on!

Most any rifle, and all of mine included, shoot a lot better than I am capable of shooting them!

I just bought a rossi .22-250 single shot. When i worked at dick sporting goods I bore sighted it. 10 shots i had a half inch group at 100 yards. It is the bull barrel model, which may be a little different. shot a coyote friday night 100 yards perfect shot. no complaints on this end.

Mr. Clean posted similar results with a Rossi some people were firing at the range. Come to find out the rifling is not good for bullets over 85-90 grain. Supposedly, .243 bullets in the 100+ grain begin to tumble immediatly after exiting the barrel. Also need to let the barrel cool after every shot.
