Start with 30-06 and form your own.

Are you looking for properly headstamped brass?
Quality Cartridge can do a custom run.

Roll your own. Resize 30-06 to 338, shoot once through the rifle and then clean and load again. Or you can buy cylinder brass and start from there. http://www.z-hat.com/Cylinder.htm

I'm told that you can take 30'06 brass, chamfer & lightly lube the inside of the neck, use a tapered smooth ball expander on the decapping rod like a Forester Die uses, and make one pass to create the 338'06 A Square case. Then to finish the P O Ackley designed AI 40* case shoulder, use a minimum powder weight charge for a 338'06 A Sq just to be as safe as possible with the pressure spike you are creating & any cheapest 338 bullet set way out so it is into the lands since you don't have any shoulder support in the chamber that will allow the primer to be struck firmly, shoot the 338'06 loaded case and it will finish out the expansion of the shoulder of the AI 40* case.
The AI'ing of the case is a 2nd step necessary, past the case mouth expansion of the 30'06 case to blow out the AI'd 40* shoulders and increase the case's powder capacity. If you have a Barnes #4 Manual, on page 125 there is a very complete explantion of how the Ackley Improved case is achieved in a 257 Roberts, and you can compare the increase in powder capacity from a standard 257 Roberts case in the previous page's load data.
Dunno about the 338'06 A Square dimensioned case, but I suspect it is like the other Ackley Improved cases, in that IF this were an AI'd 257Rbts or whatever you could just shoot factory ammo ( ie like the 338'06 A Sq case you just created actually is ) and as long as the bullet can be fired without any support from the case's shoulders it will do the same job of properly blowing out the AI'd shoulders.
Only 2 reasons I am aware of to AI a case, to eliminate case stretching as much as possible & reduces the amount of case trim work required some rounds are notorious for, and to increase the MV's slightly with a few more grains of powder.
My Nosler #6 Manual shows in a 30'06 180gr bullet, with 55gr's IMR 4350 @ 100% of capacity, gives a MV of 2758 fps, ... & jumps a tad when AI'd to 2835fps MV in 56.5 gr's IMR 4350 @ 93% capacity. OBTW Nosler makes 338'06 A Square brass if you want to eliminate that 1st step. Hope this helps. Ron

Thanks guys, I bought this rifle several yrs ago at the Tulsa gun show with the idea of rebarreling to a 7X57. It's built on a Berlin Mauser action, Douglas barrel, and great piece of English walnut stock. Thinking now about keeping it as is. Thanks again.

I'd surely keep it as is. The .338-06 is a dandy cartridge, and the AI option only makes it better. It's big enough for anything in North America without being ridiculously overpowered for Texas hunting. It sounds like a nice rifle. I am sure no one would mind seeing pics of it.

Setter Man, if you ever decide to sell that 338'06 you descibed, or even the barrel that would be leftover after a conversion to another caliber look me up, as I have an interest in that setup and particular cartridge. Ron

You may want to consider 35 whelen brass. That's what I used after trying 30-06 brass. It comes out a little long and will have to be trimmed. The 30-06 brass comes out quiet short.
