Can anyone tell me what is a good brand to get? We recently had a hunter with us that was using a Thompson Triumph stainless and iron sights. I enjoyed shooting it and I'm interested in getting into this end of hunting as well.
What is the accuracy that can be expected from a modern day muzzle loader?
What is the range you can expect?
My kids seem kind of interested as well, especially my son. Anything to keep them involved outdoors.
Thanks!

CVA and Traditions are two pretty popular brands. Thompson Contender is a higher priced rifle, many more to choose from. I have two CVA's and two Traditions, all in lines. I like the breakove design best. Of course you can choose the traditional rifles. Accuracy with what I have has been reliable a little past 100 yards but I haven't needed anything beyond that in East Texas. You can reach out and touch things well beyond that. h

I have a TC Triumph Weathershield that I like. It is very accurate and will shoot pretty tight groups out to 150 yds. It is capable of shooting to 200-225 yds accurately off a good rest. The only thing I would change on it is the trigger since it is different feel and pull weight than my bolt rifles.

I have 2 50 cal Lyman Great Plains rifles (1 percussion, 1 flinter)that are tack drivers. I shoot real black powder and patched round balls. At 50 yards sitting on the ground resting my elbows on my knees, they will put 24 balls in one ragged hole. Admitedly, the hole grows to about 1.5".
Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.

Accuracy with a muzzy can be a tough thing to accomplish. You'll need to find the right powder/bullet combo that works best with your chosen brand. Swabbing the barrel with a wet patch between shots helps with accuracy. After trying a lot of combinations...I narrowed my load to using 300gr Powerbelt platinum bullets with a 150gr magnum charge of pyrodex pellets. I've narrowed the groupings down to almost touching each other. For muley deer hunts I'll back off the charge to 100grs of pellets and a .295 grain bullet. Good luck. Muzzy hunting opens a whole new opportunity of hunting.

Knight Rifle makes a very good, very accurate muzzy - they were the inventor of the inline style. I shoot one of the older break-over models and have it sighted for 200 yards shooting 295gr Hornady and 150gr. pyrodex for deer. It usually shoots very tight groups at 200.

Great suggestions by all. Thank you very much. I really liked the Thompson Triumph that I shot but maybe I need to take a look at a few others. I'm feeling I really want to keep this one iron sights. My eyes are still good enough to shoot iron sights for now. Thanks!

The definitely keep it clean brand for its longevity. After every shoot. In fact there should be almost as much research into cleaning them as to figuring which one to purchase.

Love the TC encore. Great thing about the encore is you can change the barrel and shoot other calibers.

i own 3 of the CVA Accuras, the first run and then the v2. i have owned NEF's, Thompson centers. And i have shot several from the other guys on our lease of different brands. They all shoot, but none of them are as accurate as the CVA accuras. The break over style is very easy to clean which is a big plus.
over all the years and guns of shooting, the best to me is the cva accura, especially with the bergera barrels and the use of the cva power belt bullets. Dont go with the sabots, the power belts is the only way to go, but use the bullets that are 300 gr or more, these heavier bullets will give you the best performance, especially when it comes to knocking down the animal. you can hit the animal with any grain, but the lighter ones will not give you a good blood trail or knock them down,go to cableas, bass pro, and cva web site and research and read the reviews of the power belt bullets.
good luck

Go with a Knight Ultra Lite or Mountainer. All American made. Top quality and lots of options not available on their competition. I do all my deer and other big game hunting with in-line muzzleloaders. I have 3 50 Cal Knights(Disc Elite, Master Hunter and Long Range Hunter). All 3 have Timney adjustable triggers, and very good quality scopes. On our lease at Sonora a 150 yd shot is the norm, not the exception. After about a 1000 rounds at the range with all types of breech plugs, powder, bullets, sabots and primers I am using 110 Gr. by volume of Blackhorn 209 powder, a CCI 209M primer, Harvester's black Crush Rib sabot and 300 gr Scorpion PT Gold bullet. I sight in 3 inches high at a 100 yds and don't worry about elevation out to 175 yds. All 3 rifles will shoot a one inch 3 shot group at 100 yds. Best group .297 inches. Performance on game has been great.

Amen to that. In the "good old days" with 5 or 6 lb trigger pull and so/so barrels and ammo I was happy with a 2 inch group at a 100 yds. Thanks to Savage and others you don't need to spend hours at the range testing loads and lots of money with gunsmiths to get them to shoot decent groups.

good luck Good info. there..... Thanks for the read. CVA makes some good models. Interesting about the power belt bullets vs. sabots. meaning...more time on the range to experiment.

IMO, the best MZ is the Savage 10ML-II. It can shoot smokeless and blackpower. I use buckhorn 209 and can shoot at least 7-8 shots before seeing accuracy issue and needing to clean. I have not shot smokeless but from what I hear I is even better. http://www.chuckhawks.com/sav10ML-II.htm
It's not skybusting, if you make the shot.

I have a ML10-II muzzleloader as well, but I only shoot smokeless with a saboted pistol bullet. It is as accurate as most of my centerfire rifles. Velocities and downrange energy with Smokeless takes it beyond the blackpowder relm. But even if you only pour blackpowder into it, it is still one of the best of the top inline muzzleloaders IMHO.

On those power belts- they are designed to expand at moderate velocity and if you are not getting tight groups- try dropping down the powder charge. Even with 90 grains they should do a fine job.
