I want to build a doggy door that will eventually allow a 150 lb dog to pass through. But I DON'T WANT TO CUT A HOLE IN MY WALL. So I was thinking a back door insert. Something that slides into the door gap when open at any given angle and still uses the locks to latch it in place. If you catch my drift.

But I would need a system that would be one way. And I could train him to pull on a string or step on a paddle from the other way.

If I'm not making any sense give me till tomorrow and I will draw I diagram.

Let me hear y'all's opinions. I thought maybe a two door system through the garage then main door but still to many pest out here

Do you have a sliding glass door?

They make doors now that will only open with a chip on the dogs collar.

Neighbor rigged up a latch on a cat door that opened the latch when the cat approached the door. Had some kind of transmitter on the cats collar that opened the latch. He was having problems with raccoons getting in his shop thru the cat door. Radio shack could be your friend here...

I see a few holes in your plans...

First, how is the dog going to pull the string to open the door, and walk through the door while it is open? If he lets go of the string before he walks through, door will close...

Second, pressure sensor will be the same problem. Once he steps off, door will close. Also, you would have to think about how you are going to run the pneumatics from the pressure switch to the doggie door.

In both cases, you can use a spring or friction system to make the door close slowly, but gets pretty complicated because the settings would have to allow for the door to close at a pace that allows the dog to enter, but with enough travel distance to close all the way.

Seems like if you can train your dog to pull a string, you should be able to train him to lift a door. Put a handle on it and he can use his nose.

The electronic latch with an opener attached to the collar sounds like the best option....or quit being lazy and just let the dog in and out by walking over and opening it for him grin

My neighbor had a PHD in mechanical engineering but my other neighbor ticked him off and he moved. Let me know if you need technical assistance. Think you could train you dog to use a garage door remote ? grin

I bet he can train Tank to operate the remote for the new dog.

Get a piece of 1" plate steel cut about 1/4" smaller than a opening you cut in your shop door. Hang it on swivels. Grind the bottom edges so they are smooth and wont scratch his back.
Takes a big dog to push it in. small dogs and critters cannot move it, too damn heavy.

Just an idea Brother. Us East texas boys can build anything.

With three large dogs to support, your probably going to need a second job. I could get you started with some tree trimming if your interested...I know you like to work with wood and power equipment so it would be a good fit for you. grin

Beer and power equip like chain saws really don't mix. There are usually warnings on such equipment in regard to impaired operation. Pretty easy to lop off some important extremity. Just ask "stub" here on the forum for a first hand account..
