On average, for both size and numbers (maybe not the same counties), what would be your top 2 or so counties within say an hour or so drive east or west of I45? I'm not asking as compared to the rest of the state, just which are the best within that area assuming deer management of the property is basically the same. I realize actual first hand knowledge may not be available so reputation (good or bad) can play a part.

I always liked walker county and trinity county
Eland will be able to offer some insight on this as he has family property in that area.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Houston, Trinity and Walker counties. They've consistently had higher numbers of entries into TPWD Big Game Awards program throughout the years.

I'd talk to Eland. There are good parts of Walker and not so good parts of Walker. Getting in a good spot is crucial there, as a lot of it is vastly over hunted.

And yes. I have hunted all three and it is very location specific. Leon County is pretty good too depending on the area as well.
Having said that, shot placement is key and there is only one level of dead. Us east Texans can't afford turquoise and elk ivories for jewelry. So we use hog tushes and coon peckers.
