Good story. Nothing quite like children. I have two and they are still to young to sit in the stand with me, but my oldest loves to ride on the four wheeler and go with me when I shoot. I'm just counting the days down until mine are ready to hunt with me. Good luck this weekend.

I guess I should have said years instead of days. I have one that is two years and seven months and the other is seven months old. They are not old enough yet, but coming from a proud father, they both show great potential.

You'll like this. My Grandson will be 10 this coming Saturday. He has been hunting with me since he was 4. His first gun was a Red Ryder BB gun. He didn't get to shoot it until he could recite the laws of gun safety and name all of the gun parts. Then he started target practicing.

When we sat together in a blind, he got to take the first shot. If they didn't go down, I had to finish them off with my 30-06. He now has his Grandma's 222. The year before last, he got a cull buck and a hog. Last year, he missed a nice 10 pointer. His comment? Well, now I guess I understand buck fever.

We've had some long talks about the predator/prey relationship and he has done a good job of defending the need to hunt.

That is a great story.
I'm taking my two 12 year olds out this weekend and some other kids from the football team.
I started letting one of my sons hunt by hisself with a bow from ground blinds this year and he loves it.
However, I do miss sitting with him and spending that time with him. I remember when he was really young he would sleep and eat and play games and now I get to sleep
Enjoy it because before to long they are too big to hunt in the same stand with dad.

I know about stand shrinkage. I just finished a 4 by 8, 5 ft tall blind. 4 by 4 no longer works for us.

He's pretty well hyped up about this weekend. Yesterday he got an egg out of the fridge, a scoped 22 and loaded up a calibri. One shot and I had a backyard full of egg. Thankfully, the calibris are quiet enough to get away with shooting in the city.

How true that is.

I've been hunting with my son since he was 7. Today, he's 17. Like yours, he started bowhunting in his own stand at 12, and rifle hunting by himself at about 13. While I miss the days he & I sat in the stand together, today I just hope he goes hunting with me. He's a senior in High School, and a varsity football player. He plays football every friday night, goes to school every Saturday morning for a workout and film review, and then he works Saturday afternoon & Sunday. Oh, and when he's not in school, football practice, or working, he will probably be at his girl friends house. This is the first bow season that he & I haven't bow hunted together since he was about 12, and so far this year, he hasn't even been to our deer lease with me since April.

Dan, make the most of the time you have with your son and good luck this weekend.

Great story Dan !! This is mine and my son's first year deer hunting.
We're very excited about the Special Youth weekend. Actually i'm more excited than he is.

I hope you're little one gets a monster, God willing.

Be safe and above all have fun together.

I hunted in the same stand with my Dad up until he quit hunting in his late 60's and I almost 40. I'd hunt with him in the same blind today if only he would still hunt (he refused too after tremors got too bad). I started hunting alone in my mid teen years but the best hunts of my life, were those I shared in the stand with Dad. Space does get to be a consideration though. My 14 year old still hunts with me in the blind. It's a tight fit in the 4x4 as he's 180lbs now and 5'10" but we hunt comfortable in the new 4x6.
