How many times have you driven by something at 70 MPH and thought, “I should stop and take a picture of that!” but didn't because you were in a hurry ....and then it was GONE! Thank goodness, I finally slowed down a few years ago because the scene no longer exists. The remnants of the Wastella cotton gin and the old scale house are still there, alongside the abandoned Roscoe, Snyder & Pacific Railroad right-of way but the cotton fields in the background look like a scene out of H. G. Well’s War of the Worlds” Nothing but windmills, windmills, windmills.

If you are ever in Snyder, there is a 93 year old steam engine out at the fairgrounds that used to make its run right by the Wastella Gin.

Too bad things can't stay the way they used to be. Great picture aeb. I think I get the gist of what you're saying. Windmills, God bless 'em, are changing the looks of west Texas, forever. I guess I'm a romantic. I don't like seeing them on top of the mesas. Doesn't bother me as much to see them on a cotton field.

If you want to see a scary sight - drive to Graham from Dallas and see the endless string of windmills - looks like something out of a science fiction movie ninja

What's wrong with windmills? I ain't scared. I was watching those out by Elbert and wondered how a bird could manage to get hit by one of those giant slow-moving blades.

Great photograph. Those windmills are ruining the landscape.

You would never guess it from that pic, but there's some great deer hunting about 4 miles east of there. The cotton fields end abruptly and you fall off into the breaks.

Cool pic. I've driven by there a million times.

Looks like we will have to make a side trip into Snyder.

Thanks for the reminder. up Got some similar places I need to take pictures of along the decommisioned Quanah, Acme & Pacific Rail line. Pictures Remind me of the John Steinbeck "Grapes of Wrath" Alto I know the Gin and Elevator were in operation probably in the 60s to 70s? Cotton Modules and Grain trucks shut down a lot of remote small gins. Rail line disappeared. My dad knew the engineers on this train and got me a ride on the last run of this steamer from Childress to Quanah. Got to ride in the engine since it was moving boxcars for wheat as it last run. It is now parked in the Childress Rail Museum on South Main.

Enjoyed the nostalgia cheers

Drove by that a thousand times and never once thought to slow down and take it in. Great reminder, life moves fast so slow down and enjoy it!

When I see those big wind mills, I get one thought in my mind, everytime.

Remember this?

Great photo!

If I were from the Big Country/plains I would be constantly sad as I see what the windmills have done to the landscape. I almost want to cry every time I go through there.

Wrong Buffalo dung breath. It's Iron eyes Cody. Those commercials certainly made an impact. They need to keep running them.

I don't understand the hate on the windmills. They are ugly but the create clean electricity, put thousands of Americans to work building and maintaining them and provide income for the landowners whose property they are put on.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

Texas is supposed to be wild. It certainly doesn't look that way with windmills everywhere. What would people say if they were on the slopes of the Rockies? They wouldn't allow them , would be my guess.

They cost more than they earn or produce. The money for those jobs are by way of subsidies from the American people. Just another form of welfare. Corporate welfare.

Besides they are ugly and kill birds. South Texas is filled with them and I hate it. you won't see them up in the North East near the Kennedy's land. That Fat A$$ Ted fought to keep them off of his land and precious view.

I love the picture.
