I won the gun Mule Deer at Matador. I created a new post hoping that people can give me some info on this area. I know nothing about it other than it is supposed to be a fun hunt.

Congratulations! I did that hunt a few years back. It was the best hunt I have ever done. It is a difficult hunt, but if you work hard and stick with it, you will be rewarded! No corn feeders, no box blinds, no guides, and very little cell phone service. You will be hiking, climbing through canyons, and lots of glassing. Hopefully, there will be some dragging involved too.
If you aren't in good shape, start now. Most folks gave up about halfway through, it was too difficult for them. I shot this guy the last few hours of the hunt. EVERY ONE else had gone home and I was the only one left in the entire WMA.
GOOD LUCK!

That's a beauty Palehorse. I have quail hunted Matadore several times. I agree with all of your advice. I would not hunt this area without GPS though. It's very easy to get turned around and lost in those canyons. Also, some areas are wall to wall prickly pear cactus, and other areas have very little. Have fun on your hunt!

You are correct sir. The place is huge and you can get turned around. I just had a compass and a map. You can get up high in places and see a windmill to get your bearings. A GPS would be even better.
I would not want to break my leg around there. This was a deer that another guy shot and didn't recover till morning. The coyotes stripped it clean.

In the old days of the Type 2 permits I made several trips to Matador bow hunting. There was only one water tap available them, since then they have opened another camp ground with a dry toilet.
Now back to the water, you can drink it but it has a high gypsum content and it will set you free. Try to get a topo if possible, be sure to take a compass even with your GPS. Always take you flash light. You can be walking along in waist high grass and your next step can be into a 10 foot gully, We were not assigned units back then and if you see the 4x4 only sign you had better pay attention. It's a great place and you should see alot of animals but as has been said it is rough. If you don't feel like going into the canyons and such just get the wind in your favor and walk the roads, on a still day those big eared mulies can hear you coming for a long way. If they think they are hidden some of them will stick in cover and not run until flushed. Use you glass and hunt all day.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Very Nice Palehorse. A real beauty. Hard work payed off well.

I have been on a hog hunt and a WT hunt there couple of years back. Lot of country. I belive the map shows it to be 6 mile North South and 10 miles EW roughly. Lot of remote deep sand area. The water in lower fork come all the way from Roaring Springs, Tx (west about 30 miles)
