OK is it just me or are the lease prices out of control? I just saw a posting for a 200 acre deer lease for $3000? WTF? come on that's crazy? 10 years ago I hunted 6000 acres outside of Junction Texas for $1600 dollars a year and that included 2 houses that slept 16 people, a 10x15 walk in cooler, 500 gallon fuel tank for ranch trucks & 3 barns for storage of trucks & 4 wheelers...

Its' out of control for us poor folk but if they can get that kind of $$$, more power to them!

I once hunted a place that charged us $300 a season and New Yorkers $1500 they paid it and though they were getting a good deal.

It is the beautiful free market at work. It is so inspirational!

Let it motivate you to do what you can to either drop the price, or much better yet, easily afford the price.

Whining is poor form. Celebrate the success of those who can afford it! And then go do what you can do to afford it if it's something you want to do.

Other than that, take your money and do something else. When prices rise in a free market it means the market will bear that cost.

A few "doctors and lawyers" aren't driving the prices up. It's the success of your fellow Texans. Ain't it Great!!!?

therancher you are right on the money. If a person is charging more than the market will bare he will either go down on the price or not lease. The free market system is great.

Ten years ago gas was $1.35/gallon

Ten years ago a nicely equipped 4x4 half ton cost $25k

Ten years ago a pair of work boots cost $100

Ten years ago......

I once paid a nickel for a coke and two-bits for a gallon of gas...when I couldn't find some good drip. Of course, in those days,I wasn't paying $252/year to Governor Perry for you to hunt on my place, wasn't paying for upkeep on your hunting lodge, wasn't providing feeder stations at $1000 a pop, wasn't paying for liability in case you do something dumb, wasn't paying $1500/ton for fish feed so you can take your grandkids fishing for that Big One, wasn't paying $600/ton for deer feed so you can shoot the Big One, etc.

Crazy? Depends on how many guns on the place. Rear round with hogs, quail, dove, yotes or just deer? Maybe it also has a trophy bass tank available? Lots of things go into determining how a lease should be priced. Ten guys on the lease makes it pretty cheap and, unfortunately, there are places out there that operate that way. I consider one gun on 200 acres a bit tight but the world past my fence line seems to disagree.

Jay's garage in Moran, Texas was Dad's hangout when we went to town. Cokes were a nickel.

When I was a yute cokes were a nickel, gas was 28 cents a gallon, cigarettes were 25 cents a pack, hamburgers were 30 cents and I made a dollar an hour and we hauled hauled hay out of the field and stacked it in barns for a quarter a bale. Believe me things are a lot better now.

OP, maybe you should buy some land, then under charge for deer hunting. You can pay all the taxes, & put up with all the headaches involved, & not get as much money as you could.

You'll really show all those landowners who get as much as they can.

I think some of y'all are missing the part about hunting and the nature side of things. What's it worth to take a kid hunting when they pull the trigger the first time, or even see an animal. Back in the day just about any rancher would let you go out and hunt. Now it's another source of income for them. I agree some prices are ridiculous. I see 40 acre listings going for three grand and want two guns, scary.

The problem I see with the costs is that it is keeping alto of the younger hunters out of the woods. I could afford to hunt pretty much anywhere, but my 2 boys can't. They both have full time jobs, but the cost is just too much for them. If they aren't hunting with me then I am not hunting.
