I'm looking at tilling about 40 acres. Half of that will be sunflowers and maybe some milo and millet for dove and whatever else will eat it. Looking at probably oats or wheat for the other 20 acres for wildlife and a few cows. I was thinking of fencing off a few acres just for the deer and planting something higher in protein. Is there a premixed brand, like Tecomate or Biologic, that does well out here? Or a particular crop that will offer more protein than oats and wheat?
Property is in Runnels County. Average rainfall is about 22 inches, from what I read, and with some effort, I could irrigate if needed.

We have our farm land part leased out, all he plants is wheat. Plenty of pasture etc. for the rest off the place.

Most of the specialty browse takes too much water. For winter wheat is probably your best bet. Plant some kind of bean or pea in the spring. You will have too put a good fence around it or the cows will eat it up.

Okay. I have a lease that's a few miles east of Bronte. Lots of deer in there.

I may not have any, at least for now.

When you plant your wheat in the fall, mix in about 3lds per acre of native sunflower seeds. You'll have wheat in the winter for the deer and sunflowers in the fall for dove hunting.

I've thought about that. There's 40 acres in cultivation, split into two fields. I was thinking on focusing the one surrounded by mesquite on deer, and the other across from it on dove. That will also split up the work load of disking and planting between Spring and Fall.

Cant go wrong w/ wheat/oat mix. Deer like oats better at our place.
