I have decided on a rifle and a caliber (thanks to the THF community a weatherby vanguard s2) now i am wanting to know if anyone has anything to say about these scopes.

what i know:

very cheap but might be for a good reason...
Millet had a bunch of "lemons" before they were purchased by bushnell. I have read many bad reviews about the prior products produced by millet but now that bushnell has taken them over it seems that no one is purchasing them anymore (i guess due to the bad publicity in the past). Anyone have any experience with this product recently?

Optics are the one thing you should never go cheap on.

I understand that and agree, but I dont want to spend an arm and a leg on an "all-around" hunting rifle. i hunt all types of terrain, lots of east texas wooded areas, and lots of 3-500 yard west texas plains too. Now if it was a match rifle i could justify that, but I dont want to break the bank again.

That scope is huge and heavy (2.2 lbs). Do you really need that much magnification for 3-500 yds?
Also there have been issues with repeatability and return to zero with these scopes, here is an example:

My advice would be to would be to find a used vortex viper pst 4-16 sfp in the $500 range. You'd be getting a lot more scope for the money.
If you want to spend less a Bushnell elite tactical 5-15 can be had for $375-400 new, decent glass, excellent repeatability (yes, i own one).

I've got a 4-16X Mil/ Mil on the wife's .223 it is worth what it cost. That being said, it's the least expensive scope in the herd.

I've got SS 5-20, Bushnell Elite Tactical 6-24, and Vortex Viper PST 6-24, all of them are better scopes than the Millet. I would suggest one from one of the three other brands I have.

I would strongly suggest the SS 3-15x Mil/ Mil. If my AR 10 was built, that's exactly what I would put atop it.

The only way you can make use of 25X magnification is a rock solid rest. That level of magnification is pretty much for bench rest guns which the Vanguard is not. Get yourself a 4-12 or 4-16X for a hunting gun.

Not!

I've shot standing at 700 yards, on 20X with a solid rest. Give me a bipod and the ground, and 20X or 25X is what I'll use. Did it 6 days ago.

I know i could not do that. I agree with him, 4x or less is the right low end for a hunting scope for me. Off hand should not be more 100y or maybe 150y on a good day and medium game. At 20x and 100y off hand I would never find the right spot, and if I did, it would be super shaky.

Of course I am an avid coffee drinker!

I'm with ya. Off hand I turn the scope to the lowest magnification. Short answer is the less steady I am, the less magnification I use. But the farther/ smaller the target the more magnification. I've made a bunch of shots "positional" at 10X, even though I had 20X available.

I still say the SS 3-15X has you covered from 20 yards to 1000, super steady to offhand.

Look at Vortex. The Millett scopes are heavy. I have one on a 22 but never put another one on a real rifle. Vortex is what Im digging these days

For short money, it is hard to beat the Vortex Diamondback series. I picked up the 4-12x40 and couldn't think of a better way to spend $200. I currently have two Nikon PS, a Leupold Mark-AR and the Vortex. If I needed a scope tomorrow it would be another Vortex.
