Question for y'all self proclaimed dove experts:

In the past, I primarily focus on fields for morning hunts and watering holes in the evenings with pretty good success.

However, I have more and easier access to fields compared to water. Being that my dove hunting options is primarily limited to evening hunts after work, I was wondering: how is the evening hunting when setting up on fields (harvested corn) compared to water for evening hunts?

Should I stick to the water holes or focus on "easier" fields?

Unless you can get between them and water at the fields edge. Use google maps and see which direction they might leave to water!

I've killed plenty of doves in fields in the afternoon/evening. Give it a shot and see what happens.

I'd rather hunt a field and be done at 6 pm than shoot at 50 dove hitting a waterhole right before dark but it is fun. I have gotten my limit each time setting up on a tank in the evening this year but done so much quicker in a field. I hate birds at 10 yards...

Plus they love to land right in the middle of the pond

We had zero wind the other night. I had to take some lopers and cut down a mesquite tree to get a couple dove out of the cattle tank. Still got soaked but at least it felt good.

If your hunting a field in the evening and it is a food source, then you need to be out there earlier than you think. I would say they come in to fields to feed between 3-4pm. But that depends a little on the weather, if it is real hot and sunny they come in a little later, if it is cloudy they will come in sooner because they are going off the sunlight not a watch. But they have a lot to do before going to roost. Feed which takes an hour or longer, find gravel, and go get water, then they head to roost but they don't come to roost after dark.

Evenings are different on fields of feed, because mourning dove especially have milled around all day in trees and they come in to feed when they get ready individually. The mornings can be better because most of them get up and head straight to those fields in the mornings, so it's easier to see more coming in and usually right around daybreak.

Like previously mentioned. If you can find a good watering hole or catch them coming into roost, it can be some great shooting but it will be a lot later in the evening.

White wings are different. They seem to always stay in flocks and come in later in the morning or afternoon. At least that's been my experience.

I agree with this, but you'll still catch the late birds coming to feed later in the afternoon too.

That's true, the problem is that if you show up late and once you start shooting at the one that come in late, all the ones that have been there awhile will leave. If you get there earlier you will have more opportunities to shoot more birds.
