I saw a Marlin 336 in Wal-Mart the other day with a pretty nice price on it. However, in my research I have discovered that Marlin is now a subsidiary of Remington arms and since Remington has taken them over the quality of the rifle has dropped.

What do you guys know about this, who has one, how do you like, etc?

General consensus seems to be quality control had gone down since buyout and Marlin people are avoiding the Remington manufactured 336's. Marlin has a nice forum and you can pick up more info there. Original Marlins are marked JM on the barrels.

Marlin 336s are great rifles, older ones can found in good condition for fairly cheap.

As already stated, look for JM on the barrel.

I have a 1967 30-30 that belonged to my granfather-its a blast to shoot and accurate.

Remington has since brought the quality back up. When they originally took over Marlin, they were putting out sloppy rifles. Word got out, and sales went down. They put a temporary shutdown on their Marlin line, until they could get the quality up. Remington has since started shipping a better rifle. I would buy one, i'm just not a big fan of crossbolt safety.

I bought one of the Remington made Marlins before they halted production. I quickly sold it. It worked fine, it just wasn't the Marlin I was used to. I didn't like the way it looked and felt. I'll get another, but it will be an old one.

Went to Walmart to check out the Marlin 336. Of course the woman behind the counter might as well been a chimpanzee, she knew nothing and I am talking about nothing at all about firearms. I asked what the policy is about returning a firearm that has problems of course she didn’t have a clue, but if I could find Connie in school supplies section that she would know, “ she is the expert”. So, off I go looking for Connie in the school supplies and I found her. I said, I have been looking for you, I hear you know everything about firearms. She was honest and told me she also knew nothing. She did know that there are no returns on firearms, they have to go back to the manufacture for problems.

I went back to the gun counter and asked to see the Marlin 336. Of course they had it so strapped down you couldn’t tell anything about it. She said, “That way no one can come in here and shoot the place up” . Of course telling her that would really not stop someone from coming in and shooting the place up would have been wasting perfectly good breathing air. Anyway, after looking at the gun, I decided against it, the wood looked like plastic and it just didn’t feel right for some reason. Guess, I will be checking out the gun shows.

Whether having the gun so "strapped down" is a waste of time is irrelevant, she has a corporate policy that she must adhere to in order to keep her job. She HAS to do it whether you like it or not. You will also find that NO ONE will return a firearm or ammunition and that is for legal reasons that you probably won't agree with either, but once again, it's a necessity, not a personal insult to you.

People who complain about the knowledge of the gun counter folks at Wal-Mart reminds me of a joke that a local radio DJ said. "You don't go to CNN for d!ck jokes, don't come here for the news".

Harsh wasn't it? I can apologize and admit that I was out of line. Now, I'm going to say that if you had ever been on the other side of the counter in that setting for any length of time, you'd know why it's so Infuriating at times to continually hear these comments. I worked the gunbar at Academy for 2 1/2 years. You can't have unsecured firearms out and about. I don't make that policy, I only abide by it. It's not an insult to your firearms savvy, it's a policy instituted by bean counters and lawyers, not the "chimpanzee" at the counter making $8 an hour. Wal-Mart is even worse and you know that. You don't shop for firearms at Wal-Mart because of the great inventory or sales knowledge. You shop there for firearms because you can buy a Marlin 336 for $359.99 instead of $500 at the local mom and pop. And you know that as well, or atleast you should.

I expect someone who is working in their department to know at least something about the products they are selling, I also expect if they don't know the answer, then get on your radio and call someone who can help. I don't expect to be told to go find Connie in stationary to help.

The no return policy did not upset me, I was just wanting to know what it was. If that's the way it is, then so be it, I don't care.

I was also wanting to check the fit up on the lever to see if it was loose, did it operate smoothly, etc.

I want to drive 100mph in a 55 but........

Find an expert at anything for $8 an hour.

Nevermind, you're only going to see anything I say as a personal attack.

Hold on hoss, I don't attack anyone, I don't like it when people personally attack me, I do enjoy a good debate when both parties are civil about it. Do not forget, it is possible and acceptable to agree to disagree here.

I must not have made myself very clear. I'm not attacking you. You are taking everything I have said as an attack against you. My views are not like yours, therefore I must be against you. I just want to you to see the perspective from the other side, you don't have to agree with it, but it would be nice if you would just acknowledge that there is a possibility that the other side of the coin exists.
