I am scheduled to take the CHL Instructor course in a couple of weeks and I need a revolver for qualification. I dont want to spend a fortune so i was considering a Rossi or Taurus or one along those lines. Anyone have any experience with those or suggestions on ones in that price range?

I used to own a Rossi in .357 mag. No issues or complaints. Went bang every time.

The only tidbit I can pass along is that when my Wife and I did our renewal, we loaded 6 rounds in the magazine every time so I'd suggest a six shooter; not one of the five shooters.

A used S&W model 10 will be $375 to $400 used, a model 64 $400 to $450 if you want adjustable sights a model 15 would go $450 to $500. If your not an experienced revolver shooter you want a smooth consistent trigger pull. A lot of the used Smiths will be ex police guns that have been worked over by trained armorers.

Question, if you qualify with a revolver are you authorized to carry a semi-auto?

On a side note. You may be able to pick up a descent used revolver at GT Distributors in Dallas.

No you must qualify with a semi-auto to carry both...if you take a revolver you can only carry a revolver... also herd they made the class a one day thing...shortened the time a good bit I think...but will be the same amount of info

The law changed for students but i dont know if it applies to instructor candidates. HB 3142 by repeals the SA/NA designation for the CHL license. You can now take the exam with a revolver and carry a semi-automatic. Passed and Signed by Governor Perry 6/14/13

Hopefully i wont need the revolver for the instructor class and can qual with my M9 only.

That's the way it was when I took the course.

This. SA designation on all CHLs no matter what you qualify with.

I personally believe that a CHL instructor should know both. As an instructor, people are going to have questions about both, you should be in the position of being able to answer on both.

Nope. New rules started Sept.1. You can qualify with a revolver or auto and carry either type you want. New class hours have gone down to 5-6 hours plus range time.

If you don't want to have to go out and buy one you could always borrow one for the course. If needed I have a Ruger security-six I would be happy to loan you.

I have large collection of self defense handgun but earlier this year I bought a Rossi 351, hadn't bought anything in awhile and had looked at it at Academy. I've been incredibly pleased with this revolver, probably the best $270 I've spent.

I'm shooting a 125-grain round, flat nose bullet that I designed for medium to large frame 380 Autos, with Lil'Gun. I use a Ross Leather slide holster and MaxFire Speedloaders. This has become my favorite carry handgun.

I bought my wife a snub nosed .38 Rossi back in February. We sold it in march. Maybe it's because I've never snot a snub nose revolver, but I couldn't shoot it worth a dang. Like 1/6 on a 12" target at 20ft. I can't say definitively if it was us or the gun, but I won't buy another.

I had a Rossi for a few weeks. Could wiggle the cylinder & it would freewheel . Took it back & got a used Smith & Wesson.
