I completely agree. It's just another desperate attempt to take away our rights by any means necessary. They can claim that all they want but be bottom line is the money would likely be channeled elsewhere

It would probably generate $600 million per year if people kept buying ammo at the same rate as they do now. I bet ammo consumption would drop by half.
Then your loosing all the money that the ammo companies would be paying in taxes.
Overall it would probably be a wash.
But then again, reducing ammo consumption by half would be their real goal anyway. In the bigger picture, $600 million is nothing to this government.

Vote for the Texas Lottery the money will be used to expand education. Ammo tax will help law enforcement. Extra revenue from the sale of beer and wine will lower your property tax We're from the government and we are here to help If you do the crime you do the time.

Instead of taxing us more, why don't they cut down on the spending?

Because they can tax us more.
Think about it, if they thought anyone would actually revolt then they might cut back. They know there's not going to be any forcible action on the part of the American people short of someone being voted out of office. Maybe. Folks keep rolling on in their own little bubble until someone tells them they should care. Not enough actually pay attention to know what's going on until it's too late.
They have no fear of real consequences hence, they do it because we let them.
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

They shouldn't count on any revenue from me. I have enough ammo on hand for every firearm I own to last me (probably) the rest of my life.
Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.

They have no fear of real consequences hence, they do it because we let them. That's right. The American people, and men in general (some even amongst our midst), have been lulled asleep and told that "violence doesn't solve anything". We all innately know how to "deal" with bullies yet we expect people in congress to be different? We are told "its for our safety", "it's for the kids", "it's for a better society"... and then do nothing.
