I was cleaning one of the 16ga shotguns today and after running a brush through the barrel 10 times there was still junk from the breech end in about 3 inches. I scrubbed and scrubbed and used solvent and its still there though not as much. Please tell me it's not rust. Could it be wad residue? The rest of the barrel is super slick.

This is the rest of the barrel

Honestly from the photo it does look a bit like pitting, try using some navel jelly. You can buy it at places like lowes, it took me a while to find it but they did carry it. That will eat the rust essentially if that's what it is, I would keep cleaning and see if it comes clean though.

IMO you should NOT ever use navel jelly on a gun for any reason. Navel jelly will eat through steal. If you leave it on for to long or do not clean it all off it will keep eating the barrel. Try 0000 steal wool.

Try using a piece of a brass dish scrubbing pad.

looks like plastic.
you need to run a wet patch
or mop through and let it sit
overnight to give the solvent
time to work. if it's still
not coming out maybe it is
pitting. i'd try to see if it'll
clean out first before trying
any extreme measures. you might
try to spray a little brake cleaner
through also in case it is plastic.

True, I should have added that part. It is very effective at cleaning up the rust for that reason though as well. You are correct you don't want it to stay in your barrel.

JB Bore Paste...and it looks like plastic residue from shotgun wads. You been shooting some really old shells or Remmy's???

I had loaded some really old Remmy wads years ago in a S&W 3000 20 guage and it looked like that. Shot it the rest of the seaon and the gunk would not come out. Traded it and the dealer soaked the barrel full of solvent over nite several times, gave up and used Steel Wool wrapped on a wooden dowel wet down with carb cleaner or ??? to finally get it to come clean...using an electric drill motor....keep it wet and change out the SW frequently as it fills up with the residue.

These days JB Bore Paste or some other product designed to remove copper buildup is the way to go.

I read about a solvent that was supposed to be especially effective on plastic fouling, but it was years ago and I can't remember what it was. Lotsa help here , huh?

Actually, I as thinking that letting the bore soak in Kroil overnight might be effective.
