here's my problem and i don't know where to start. i'm new to bow hunting. i hunt with a bear black bear that is set at its max which is 55#. i'm using carbon express arrows and muzzy broadheads. i shot a doe opening weekend that looked to be a good shot, but maybe a tad high from center. the arrow didn't pass through and i had no blood trail to follow. all i had was the sound of her crashing. i never found her. then this past weekend when i was hunting i shot a bobcat. i know the shot was hurried since he was on the move, but i tagged him in the neck and the arrow didn't pass through. he just ran into the cover with an arrow stuck in his neck. what can i do to help my penetration? i really can't afford a new bow this year, so is there better broadheads for slower bows, or arrows that have better penetration. any advice will help.

What weight broadhead are you shooting?

I would shoot a smaller diameter cut on contact broadhead like the Sonic broadheads.

From my experience with a similar shot(high pass through) the blood trail would be very light.....a few drops here and there with a lot of distance between them.

The doe bleed out internally and is laying out there some where. The blood pooled in the chest cavity.

In my opinion the problem isn't with your energy on target it was shot placement. A non pass through leaves the broad head in the animal to continue cutting as the deer runs off.

FWIW.......I am not criticizing because I have done it myself.

You may want to try a 100 gr. steel force. they are cut on contact, as well as, they have a long taper from front to back. IMO the longer taper will give you better penetration with a Bow that isn't making alot of kenetic energy.
Most of your traditionalist, shoot a long cut on contact broadhead for that reason.

My bow is shooting in the low 60's and I shoot a 100 grain Thunderhead. I remember only one time that I my arrow did not go all the way through.

I'm also new to the bow scene, actually haven't even bought one yet but contemplating because all the public land around here is bow only.

so the question is what do you mean about "speed" of the bow? The bow Im looking at says 300 fps, 60lb x 30 " draw

I'm not going to dump a grand+ on a setup to find out i don't like bow hunting So I'm looking at some ebay specials (I know I know, buyer beware) to break into the sport but do not want to buy a bow that will bounce arrows off game (deer/hogs)

Friendly advice welcome
Mark

I'd try a good cut-on-contact broadhead. 55 pounds should be plenty enough power to cut thru the animal. My wife shoots 40 pounds with mechanical blades ans has gotten passthrus on deer. You may be interested to try a Magnus 4-blade or a Magnus buzzcut with bleeders. Good bloodtrails with those.

I would try a 2 blade, cut on contact. They may not fly quite as well, but will out penetrate the rest of the options. You might also try shooting a heavier arrow. JMO

Dozer, mulched, and trackhoe work. Fencelines, senderos, tanks. Let me know if I can help with any dirtwork or construction.

Try some G5 stykers or slick tricks. Smaller and sharper than the big bulky muzzys.

I would shoot small diameter like Full Metal Jackets and maybe Magnus Buzzcuts. My wife is shooting 600 ST Epics with 85 gr. Magnus Buzzcuts around 47 lbs. and getting extraordinary penetration. JMO.

I'm vertically challenged so I have a small bow. I shoot a Parker Sidekick set at 55lb with a 24" draw. Yes I believe shot placement is key. But I got good penetration with 100grain Slick Trick.

Why are you still talking, I stopped listening a long time ago!!

Yep. Shot placement is key. You dont have to get a pass through to find the deer. 55# should be plenty.
