My future son-in-law is showing some interest in one of these in a 7 mag and has asked my opinion. I do not know anything about the 783. If anyone here could provide some input and a short review it would really be appreciated.

I may be wrong, but I think this is the same action as the old Charles Daly (Zastava action from the Serbia area). Usually a little rough, and I heard that the Remington stocks weren't the best fitting. Action is standard Mauser, so might be worth the money if price is reasonable.

RJD, I think you are thinking of the 798. Maybe I'm wrong.

Well in Remington's own words it is a cross between the Remington 700 and the 770. That being said it isn't better than the 700 yet isn't worse than the 770... I have seen them priced 375-450 (thats not online, I don't look online because by the time you add FFL charge, shipping, and tax the cost is not reliable)and the Remington 700 SPS is 397.00 at my Walmart. That being said I think the 783 is a rip off.

Its a Me Too Ruger American and Savage Axis. It would also be an admission that the 770 is a huge piece of garbage.

The 798 is the commercial mauser built in Serbia by Zastava. Zastava's are very strong & very well made but a tad cruder finished than the CZ 550 version of the Czech commercial BRNO gun off the original Czech VZ 24 milsurp's...whcih are acknowledged as the best of the non FN 98's.

Remington no longer imports the 798's...they were called that to designate the "7" as a Remmy bolt action CF rifle, and the "98" to designate the traditional Mauser design. Big heavy stout and very accurate guns built for hard use. Current Zastava's are using the euro hog back oiled walnut design stocks, and some offer double triggers too.

I just spent 3 days looking at Zastava's all over the Web, and think they may be a bargain when you find one for sale that fits your needs if you don't mind the TLC needed to slick them up & the xtra weight in comparison to Rem/Sav/Rug/'Chesters. Find a 798 Remmy for around $500 NIB, grab it and consider your self lucky. CZ's went thru this same cycle about 10 years ago...and my CZ 9.3x62 is an awesome shooter I own for bunches less than I can buy one for now....just wish I had bought 10 or 15 of them back then in '03 & '04.
Cheers
Ron

Corey Douglas where did you see that Remington said it was a cross between the 770 and a 700? I read that it was supposed to be a middle ground in terms of price point, but I can't find anything that says it shares many features with the 770. Just curious

Here's a little write up on the 783. It'll be interesting to see how well it is recieved. It just has got to be better than the 710/770 abominations. Hopefully.

Quote:
Remington's newest bolt-action rifle is the Model 783. The "7" in the model designation comes from the 700 line of rifles, the "8" is kind of a throwback to the affordable but reliable model 788, which was discontinued 20 years ago, and the "3" is for the three in 2013. The suggested retail price is $451, but you can expect street prices to be closer to $400.

For the life of me can't see why you would want it when an SPS can be had for about the same/a little more.

I would agree, but I've seen the 783 for 399, and I've not seen the SPS for less than 599 (though, I haven't looked very hard). What does the SPS run by you guys?

Well what I am referring to came off of Remington's website before the 783 was released. I just went to Remington's website to confirm that statement and it is no longer there, now there is just a description of the 783 that is oddly close the 700. That being said I am not bashing on Remington (I hunt deer with a 700 and shoot ducks with an 1100) but after holding the 783 at a gunshow, I wouldn't dare buy one when I could get a SPS cheaper.

I totally agree with Correy. The Remington Model 700 is the best selling bolt action hunting rifle in history, and for decades the definitive Model 700 has been the BDL Deluxe.

I see $599 a lot but that is full blown Gander/BP/Cabelas retail. At the WMs I have around I see them for $459 or so. But the $397 does not surprise me. Should be able to find one between $400-450 with a little looking. Stainless is a bit higher as are the WSMs.

FWIW I have a LNIB stainless SPS in .300 WSM I am about to list in the classifieds for $550.

That must be the SPS with pencil barrel, tupperware stock, and no bottom metal.

The SPS with heavy barrel, varmint stock, and bottom metal are $599 or more.
