I am interested in purchasing a suppressor to be used for predator control.

Would it be possible to use the same suppressor on both an AR-15 chambered for 5.56 and something like a 10/22 chambered in 22 LR. I am more interested in suppressed 22LR, but I am curious if you could also use it for an AR.

Yes, you can use it for both. The 22LR ammo is generally dirty, and your can may need cleaning after heavy use. I just got a 223 rated can for both 223 and 22LR.

My understanding is that you can shoot 22 out of a 223 suppressor but not vice versa. I dont see why a 223 can cant be switched between a 22 and 223 rifle.

My understanding is the suppressor is married to the gun and putting it on another weapon it was not registered to could cause you issues.

No, the suppressor is the registered part, you can put it on any rifle/pistol that you want!

I would advise against running a .223 suppressor for .22 unless you can take it apart. Shooting .22 is filthy and requires alot of cleaning.

Dallas,

Are there disadvantages of a suppressor that comes apart for cleaning? Or running a .223 suppressor on the 22LR other than cleaning?

I am completely ignorant on suppressors, but I am in a lot of situations where a 22 equipped with a suppressor would come in handy. I was just thinking that suppressing my AR would also be neat for coyote hunting at night around livestock.

22lr cans can generally be taken apart, so they can be cleaned. 223 cans generally can not be taken apart as they have to be built to take more pressure.

Take apart cans have looser tolerances.

Couldn't of said it better. I would not own a .22 can that can't be taken apart. They are the only can that I think of that this is a necessary feature of, .22 is filthy.

.223 cans don't need to be taken apart.

Colt,

Trust me....get a different suppressor for the .22LR. Nasty like others have said and needs to be broken down to keep it clean. I would get a 30 Cal suppressor to handle your .223 or 5.56 needs so that way it can handle a 30 cal if you have one. 7.62SDN-6 works great for me.

Ask someone else and they will tell you something different. Gather the information then make the decision.

Shhhhhhhh better to be quiet than remove all doubt..

Thanks guys.

Now a 30 caliber suppressor that would also work on an AR sounds really interesting. I have a custom built short barrel .308 win that is an absolute tack driver. Quieting that guy down some would be nice.

Thanks Triji, I am scientist/researcher by trade, and gathering info is something I am use too.

I had a range officer tell me that me switching my can from gun to gun was illegal . And that a guy had been arrested for it up there days before ..... Stupid range officer !

That's why you always ask on the THF smile Tanner helped me through all that stuff and I decided on YHM 30cal can for my 308 and 223 rifle. Been thinking of getting a dedicated 22 can, but don't even want to think about the wait times right now with the ATF

I run my user serviceable 5.56 can on my 22 all the time, like above though I would advise against using a sealed unit for .22

Another option for suppressing a .22 is going the integral silencer route
http://www.thompsonmachine.net/?page_id=14
or
http://www.innovativearms.com/

I actually use a .45 suppressor on my .22 and it works great but is a lot bigger than a dedicated .22 can.
