I would guess 4.5 to 5.5. Slight gut, no sway in his back, not a real heavy neck and like quackaholic says I don't think he will make 13" either.

Mature, 5+ for age. Buck is very thick chested and deep bodied. Head is triangular and he looks short nosed due to age. Belly is sagging a lot. To close to call for spread for me. I would have to pass him on spread not age.

I would go measure that tree behind him and interpolate the size of the rack. Then make a judgment call.

Much easier to measure the varmit cage and get a pic of him standing directly below it.

First and last picture tell the story. Fully mature buck (5 year old). 12.5 on the spread (darn shame you can't legally harvest that deer).

Great point. The cage could be slightly adjusted so that it appears square to the camera and provide good reference for every photo taken.

If it's round in shape, no adjustment needed.

Or you can do like I used to and hang a 24" long board with every 1" marked on it.

With the deer being well into the target age group the current AR's were meant to strengthen, I would suggest showing the photo to your local TPWD officer to see if would consider it as acceptable. If nothing else, you'll get an idea on how strict his enforcement will be for older bucks that sit on the fence.

Based on the results of a poll I created some time ago, some officers take the same approach with AR's, especially on older bucks, as street officers do with speed limits.

I'd have to wait until he's hard-horned to know for sure, but I believe I'd take him. Definitely mature.
