Right now it's 7.25/bag at Oasis and Farmers in Uvalde. And it should drop more as the harvest continues.
It's been a great year and the prices are finally reflecting it.

Wow, this turned out to be pretty informative. Any talk about price changes? I talked to a feed store in Johnson City yesterday. The owner predicted a drop of about $.50/50# in the next month as the growers start cutting the fields and storing or selling. He said it was too early for him to lock in a price with anyone b/c the prices were sure to drop. So, somewhere around $7 per 50#. After that, it may drop lower.

BOBO, I am not trying to call you out, but I keep some of our corn harvest every year to plant food plots for buddies all the time. It comes up just as wheat, soybeans or milo harvest seed. I actually have a spot on our farm in Kansas that always has volunteer corn from the August harvest that is about 12" tall in mid September. When the corn rotation is in that year, it is the best spot to get our "eater doe". Last year I didn't want to harvest a buck, so I took a doe while she was eating a volunteer corn plant at 20 yards with my bow.
Granted, corn isn't the best food plot (for several reasons, especially how much fertilizer it takes), but we like variety....for some reason the deer do too.

I heard that a local market here in Nacogdoches was selling bags for $6 last week. I'm assuming they were 40 lb bags.

getting 40lb bags for just over $6.... ^dang NUboy how far is that from Navasota? Where? I think corn is around 7.50 bag on the ton at producers in bryan, but if I can save the drive I will. Have we been getting any rain down there lately and what does yalls lake look like. Got lucky earlier last month and got a good one but the last 3 weeks of 100-105 heat has taken that away.... not in bad shape though the spring lakes still look good... oh and at Brookshire Brothers in Normangee...it was half a pallet left and they had it priced down to get rid of it...lol I got rid of it quick... now $7.50 and they usually keep a pallet or two in stock.... M&M always is right in line with coop so I just save the drive and get it there even if its a bit higher

Last week Brookshires in the Nacogdoches/Lufkin area was selling corn for $6.18 per 40# bag. If you bought a pallet they would sell that for $292 ($5.84/bag). Of course they ran short but I got on three different waiting lists for a pallet at each one and was notified Wednesday that I had a pallet of corn waiting on me at two different Brookshirs. Of course that would happen when I don't have $600 to tie up in corn, but I got one and put a buddy on the other. If the third pallet doesn't show up for a week or two I will get that one.

They will eat fresh corn over last years corn. When I was raising hogs, we had our own hammermill for grinding and making feed. Fresh dried field corn is a world of difference in taste from a previous seasons properly dried and stored corn. You could eat it fresh right out of the mill and like the taste. Old corn...no way. Hogs loved it fresh. A little whey made it really sweet. We would add in some oats too and it would taste just like having morning cereal.

Granted, corn isn't the best food plot (for several reasons, especially how much fertilizer it takes), but we like variety....for some reason the deer do too. Issue is in replanting harvested corn..large majority if not all corn is hybrid seed with a terminator gene..on top of that you have patent issues, and seed companies don't mess around It may come up, and it might even grow a few ears but your bushell an acre will be a lot, lot less.

Wondering why you say that, been doing it for years with no issues as of yet. We had our own metal barrels for a while but made feeders out of them and started using his plastic ones. I just emptied my last barrel the other day from last year. If i keep them off the ground or floor and out of the sunlight they stay good, only may get a few weevils. If left in the sun they can get bad from the barrel sweating. He sells several hundred barrels a year, as crazy as that sounds. He fills up a good size conex box for extras and that not counting the people like me who pick all mine up at once.

All corn has moisture in it, combine humidity and you can get into mildew issues when it can't breath. Kind of like you mentioned about barrels sweating

This is why I keep them out of the sun and on blocks of the floor, so the sun doesnt heat up the barrel and cause condensation inside and so air can get get underneath. I have thought about just buying bags though, the drums take up too much space in barn and getting tired of wrestling them !

We used to this also, but after having to try to get the barrel loaded and then get the corn out the barrel and into a feeder we quit. Much easier to buy good clean corn in bags and be done with it. Recleaned corn bin run corn is a no brainer IMO.
